Of the many Spider-Men to appear in the hit 2018 Into The Spider-Verse film, Nic Cage’s Spider-Man Noir was a fan favorite. Despite recent reports that the National Treasure actor will not return for the upcoming sequel Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse, sources are indicating the neo-noir detective will be getting his own spinoff series. According to a report from Murphy’s Multiverse, a Spider-Man Noir series has been ordered at Amazon Prime, as part of Sony’s ongoing cinematic universe.

Some fans have been a bit mixed up regarding the continuity of Spider-Man in the last few years, as the beloved character has been treated like the child of a wealthy divorced couple, forced to trade Christmases every other year. Marvel currently has limited access to use the Spider-Man character within the MCU, while Sony has the rights to most stories and villains from the Spider-Man comics, such as Venom and Morbius. Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man even crossed over with Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iterations of the web slinger in No Way Home, whereas John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham or Nic Cage’s Noir take on the character is solely a product of Sony.

The upcoming Amazon Prime series is said to be the second of its kind, with Silk: Spider Society already under development to premiere as a Sony owned Spider-Man product within the same universe as the upcoming Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web films. Silk: Spider Society is being developed by former The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, (No relation to The Conqueror) while the untitled Spider-Man Noir series is set to be produced by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal, as well as Oren Uziel. Despite Nic Cage’s portrayal being the titular Spider-Man Noir, it is uncertain if he has signed on to star in the project at this time.

Sources are indicating that the new show will be live action, and will not follow a Peter Parker variant as the main protagonist. This may mean that Nic Cage will not be involved, or that his role in the show will be reduced to that of a cameo or tertiary appearance. Regardless, fans will be happy to see a dark, gritty adaptation of the famed wall crawler, similar to the treatment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

Whether Nic Cage appears in the show or not, we know he’ll be quite busy. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star has half a dozen films in active stages of production, each set to arrive on screen in 2023 or 2024. The prolific actor has appeared in over 100 films and shows no sign of slowing or stopping with age. In fact, with career re-defining films such as Pig, Mandy, and Willy’s Wonderland, the legendary actor continues to expand his horizons and give us some of the greatest work of his decades-long career.

Fans would certainly be overjoyed to see Nic Cage appear in the series, as his stern, almost sinister portrayal of the friendly Noir Spider-Man could take the character in a bold new direction. Plus, a live action adaptation of Nic Cage in underoos would be enough to get any fan to tune in. There is currently no news on the show’s release, but be sure to stay plugged in to Giant Freakin’ Robot for any updates!
