Netflix True Story Thriller Continues To Break Records

Netflix’s latest sensation, the international film Society of the Snow, is charting a historic path both in terms of streaming figures and on the award circuit. Directed by the renowned Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona and released on January 4th, the film, which was responsible for significant international acclaim, rapidly ascended to one of Netflix’s most impactful non-English hits.

Society Of The Snow On Netflix

It debuted on the streaming giant as its second-largest premiere for a non-English language film (in terms of hours watched).

Moreover, in a mere 11 days, the movie garnered a staggering 51 million views; it is number ten on Netflix’s list of biggest non-English language films.

This feat is particularly notable because Society of the Snow contends for 91-day viewing figures with all other titles, including last year’s multi-award-winning German film All Quiet on the Western Front.

Other Contenders

Regarding non-English films, only Norway’s Trolls has surpassed the Spanish-language film in terms of hours watched.

Another Spanish film, Nowhere, has only barely outperformed it in the realm of raw views. These titles claim the top two positions on Netflix’s coveted list of most popular non-English language films ever

But all this would distract from the sheer speed of the rise of Bayona’s film. Assuming it continues ascending in views and hours watched at its accelerated pace, Society of the Snow evidences strong potential to climb even higher in the rankings shortly.

Fantastic Critical Reception

Moreover, the film’s success surpasses mere viewership numbers. So far, it’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews, notching a commendable and uncommon 90% on Rotten Tomatoes

Thanks to its harrowing narrative, singular direction, and attending Oscar buzz, the film has resonated globally and landed in Netflix’s Top 10 in 93 countries. These include France, Germany, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, and the U.S.

Could Win Major Awards

Thus, unsurprisingly, the movie should claim some significant awards. In the U.K.’s upcoming BAFTAs, it’s been longlisted for the Film Not in the English Language category.

Society of the Snow has also been shortlisted for the Oscars—in four categories: international feature film, makeup & hairstyling, original score, and visual effects.

If that weren’t enough, the film claimed the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Audience Award and scored the Award’s highest ranking ever; the movie has also been nominated for a whopping 13 Goya Awards.

Stateside, the streaming hit received a Golden Globes Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and two Critic’s Choice Awards (Best Foreign Language and Best Score) nominations.

A Tragic Story Retold

Society of the Snow recounts the tragic, infamous, and inspiring story of a 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed in the Andes Mountains carrying 45 people, including a rugby team and their families.

Stranded at extremely high altitudes and with little supplies to fortify themselves against the harsh weather, the survivors endured an unimaginably harrowing 72-day ordeal.

Because rescue seemed impossible, the stranded passengers faced starvation and an agonizing decision: whether or not to eat the plane’s deceased passengers to survive.

A Courageous And Perilous Journey

Following numerous hardships and failed rescue attempts, two courageous survivors embarked on a perilous journey across the mountains. Their incredible bravery and resilience led to the ultimate survival of all 16 strange passengers.

It all makes for a shocking, incredible story, and an extraordinarily popular film: Society of the Snow.
