Every now and then, a film will come out of nowhere and everyone agrees that they just witnessed the birth of a new franchise. M3GAN elicited this reaction just last month when it records for a horror film, and now, fans want the latest murder doll to make an appearance in another franchise famous for bringing toys to life: Toy Story. Once Disney announced Toy Story 5 is a real thing that’s happening, social media erupted with demand that everyone’s new favorite doll is included.

We like what @ShugZ is suggesting, and M3GAN could be exactly what the franchise needs in its return from the amazing ending of Toy Story 4. Woody made the choice to become a “Lost Toy” alongside the love of his life, Bo Peep, and traveling with a carnival. What if, Woody and Peep find M3GAN lost in the wilderness and decide to bring her to Bonnie as a new toy?

M3GAN 2 could end with the malicious AI finding sentient toys, curious about what strange technology is allowing them to walk and talk, she journeys with them and into the plot of Toy Story 5. It’s an insane concept and will never ever happen but Toy Story has already delt with body horror and existential dread, what’s a little murder?

That’s right, the official Twitter account for M3GAN referenced the villain from the very first Toy Story nearly 30 years ago. As horrible as that sentence was to read, just think of M3GAN getting revenge for all of the toys mangled by the worst kid in cinema since Problem Child. Bonus points if Sid, now in college, turns out to be a good guy pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering.

@Robot_Bastard decided to overthink the odd quirks that govern the Toy Story universe, and it is true, “don’t move around humans” is a choice that the toys have violated in past movies. How would M3GAN, a robot, be classified under the strange rules governing Toy Story? She already has problems with authority and Mr. Potato Head could be scrambled, over and over, every time he tries to enforce the “rules.”

More commentors on Twitter wondered how M3GAN would behave, but this sounds like the most interesting. Especially implying that the Toy Story franchise is filled with the souls of the undead. Since M3GAN is expected to move and walk around as a robot, would that be her “normal” form, while a new non-murderous personality would be present when the toys are active.

This version sets up the especially dark scenario of the toys keeping humans safe from M3GAN without giving away the dark, eldritch horror that animates their own forms. As with the best Chucky movies it could be darkly comic with M3GAN’s elaborate murder methods constantly being undone by a slinky. If Disney really wants to revive Toy Story as a viable franchise moving forward, playing with horror themes is a legit way to go about it.

Unfortunately, it’s far more likely that M3GAN 2 will be a blockbuster hit even bigger than the first while Toy Story 5 continues to squeeze blood out of a rock. The next big horror franchise from James Wan has the sky as the limit. While Disney should really introduce a new group of toys in a brand new setting as Toy Story is currently experiencing diminishing returns.

In a potential cross-over, whoever loses, we win.
