Although it doesn’t technically hit theaters until tomorrow, Friday, January 6, 2023, Gerard Johnstone’s sci-fi horror flick M3GAN is already raking in shining reviews, including a top rating from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes who have given the picture a dazzling 96 percent. To make things more exciting for prospective fans everywhere, production company Blumhouse is anticipating their evil little piece of artificial intelligence to be as much of a hit as Don Mancini’s Chucky as they recently announced that they were planning to go full franchise with your newest friend ‘till the end. With curtains opening on the film everywhere this weekend, only time will tell whether the audiences agree with the critics and Blumhouse on the company’s latest horror venture.

In the film, M3GAN is a doll created from artificial intelligence whose sole purpose is to be a close friend and protector of the child who owns her, as well as a helping hand to the parents who gift the doll to their kiddo. Created by a roboticist named Gemma, the inventor’s world is turned upside down after she gains sole custody of her young niece Cady following the tragic death of the girl’s parents. Woefully underprepared to step into a caretaker role, Gemma programs a M3GAN doll to be her and Cady’s protector against anything that may harm them – something that will most certainly lead to a horror-filled disaster.

Get Out star Allison Williams leads in M3GAN as the doll’s inventor Gemma with Violet McGraw as Cady. Filling out the ensemble cast will be Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Stephane Garneau-Monten, Arlo Green, and Lori Dungey. The original story was penned by Akela Cooper and James Wan with the former writing the screenplay.

M3GAN will be the first mashup project between Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions with the two coming out with a slew of highly anticipated content over the next year. Along with backing the terrifying tale of the AI doll, the studios will also thrill audiences with Insidious: Fear the Dark, They Listen, and The Exorcist. They’re also allegedly in pre-production on the long-awaited film version of the video game favorite Five Nights at Freddy’s, but we’ll believe it when we see it!

Those who keep up with Jason Blum and his production company will know that 2022 was a terrific year that saw the crew round out their Halloween trilogy with Halloween Ends, which put a bow on the end of the decades-long franchise, whether fans were pleased with it or not. Blumhouse also backed Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone, Dashcam, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, Run Sweetheart Run, Soft & Quiet, and Nanny. For those who didn’t catch a glimpse at Jason Blum’s terrifying Halloween costume this past year, the creative paid homage to his upcoming box-office success by dressing as M3GAN in a look that sent chills down our spines.

If you’ve been waiting to see what all the fuss is about, the time’s almost here. Grab your friends, get your tickets and your popcorn, and take your seat to see the horror unfold when the critically acclaimed M3GAN hits theaters this weekend.
