After years of staying out of the spotlight, Lindsay Lohan is finally primed for a comeback, and her fanbase is delighted. Movieweb reports that her return to acting will go beyond a Netflix Christmas movie, with her best film getting a follow-up 20 years later. Freaky Friday, the Disney remake of the original bodyswap classic, is being revived, and Jamie Lee Curtis will be re-joining her on-screen daughter.

“It’s going to happen. Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”

Throughout 2022, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have mentioned a follow-up to their hit film, and now the Everything Everywhere All At Once star confirms that it will happen. The 2003 film starred the pair as Tess and Anna Coleman, a classically mismatched pair that swapped bodies through a magic fortune cookie and spent a day walking through the other’s shoes. Mishaps with their boyfriends, Ryan and Jake, played by Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray, ultimately accept what each of them is going through and reverse the magic spell.

It’s a simple plot, but it’s also very well done and praised by critics and the moviegoing public. The film made $160 million with a budget of only $25 million, making it a huge hit for Disney before the company routinely released billion-dollar blockbusters. Lohan went on to star in many more movies following Freaky Friday, which was only her second film, but it wasn’t long before the star burned out and retreated from the limelight.

Following I Know Who Killed Me, a bizarre thriller in which she plays a stripper, Lindsay Lohan focused more on small cameos before finding a new niche in the world of reality television. A far cry from the heights of Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club was a definitive step backward for her career, but it did help the star regain her confidence and put her back on the path to scripted projects.

Falling For Christmas was Lohan’s first movie in a new partnership with Netflix, with Irish Wish following the next year, bringing the hottest star of the early aughts back to the spotlight. If Disney is bringing back Enchanted, Hocus Pocus, and The Santa Clause, why not a Freaky Friday follow-up? As it stands today, someone somewhere is working on it, and thankfully the star of Herbie Fully Loaded is along for the ride.

Freaky Friday may have a quaint premise for today’s modern audience, but the recent horror movie Freaky proved there’s still some life in the bodyswap concept. A motivated Lindsay Lohan getting to sink her teeth into another swap done 20 years later provides plenty of opportunity for deeper storylines examining the pressures placed on different generations today. Here’s hoping Disney releases more news soon, as that concept sounds amazing, and while Lohan went away to live in the Mediterranean for a few years, her fans have stayed and will undoubtedly welcome her and their favorite movie with open arms.
