At this point, I feel like you can show up in a Hollywood studio pitch room, start off with something like, “A guy and his dog…” and that baby would be greenlit before you got to the end of the sentence. It just seems like once or twice (or more) a year we get a heartwarming story of a guy developing a fierce bond with his dog as they overcome some massive life hurdle. Heck, it just happened with Channing Tatum in Dog. And we could be getting it again with Grant Gustin soon on Netflix. He’s set to star in Rescued by Ruby which will detail his character likely being rescued by said rescued dog. I think we can all see what’s coming here.

In the first look at Rescued by Ruby we get Grant Gustin as Dan, a determined, but slightly awkward state trooper who dreams of being part of the K-9 unit. But he’s got a problem: the dude doesn’t have a dog. That is until he heads to the animal shelter to find the perfect match. It doesn’t take long and soon he’s going home with Ruby, a dog who at the outset is anything but police dog material. So begins the journey of these two as they work together to find themselves, rescue each other, and try to manufacture more than a few tears among the viewing audience. Rescued by Ruby is said to be based on a true story, though specifics on that tale are a bit murky at this point. In all, it looks like a solid family film, especially for all of the dog lovers out there. Grant Gustin is likable enough on the screen, clearly able to play the part of the trooper here who is working overtime to fulfill a particular dream. And Ruby is just the kind of dog that can bring it on the big screen, getting into all kinds of canine hijinks while they try to work through the ranks and goals of the K-9 unit.

In addition to Grant Gustin, Rescued by Ruby also includes fellow CW’er Scott Wolf who is currently starring in Nancy Drew on the network. Kaylah Zander, Camille Sullivan, and Tom McBeath round out the cast. It’s directed by Katt Shea who’s been working in the business a long time and has directed films like Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, The Rage: Carrie 2, and Poison Ivy.

Of course, fans of Grant Gustin will know him for the role that put him on the map. That is in The CW’s The Flash where he plays the Arrowverse’s Barry Allen. He first made an appearance as the character in Arrow but transitioned to a solo show shortly after. It is currently in its 8th season and has been a solid performer in this universe, marking it as one of the Arrowverse’s longest-running series. Now fans get to double-dip on Grant Gustin with Rescued by Ruby premiering on Netflix on March 17th of this year.
