Marvel Director In Talks For 28 Years Later Zombie Sequel

By April Ryder | Published

If you’re already excited about the release of 28 Years Later, you may have some feelings about Nia DeCosta being in talks with Sony Pictures to sign on as director of the next film in the series. When 28 Years Later was officially cleared for production, the movie was announced as one piece in a new trilogy of additions to the series.

Danny Boyle Returning, Nia DeCosta On Board

The director of the film that started it all, 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle is lined up to return as director on the upcoming revival of the series, 28 Years Later.

Alex Garland (the guy who wrote the original movie) penned 28 Years Later and is on board to write the screenplay for each of the films in the upcoming trilogy.

With the next entry in the trilogy scheduled to go into production shortly after the release of 28 Years Later, Sony Pictures felt it necessary to hire Nia DeCosta as the second directorial talent in their toolbox.

28 Years Later Timeline

With no exact dates on the proverbial table, 28 Years Later is set to begin filming sometime this year and Nia DeCosta will begin filming her entry in the series directly after.

However, it is going to be interesting to see how the change in directors affects the flow or harmony of the trilogy as a whole. Will Sony choose yet another director for the third movie?

DeCosta certainly brings no slack in the directorial department. Sony did choose some talented individuals to collaborate for this set of films, and it will be interesting to see how 28 Years Later is built upon by Nia DeCosta’s directorial style.

Nia DeCosta Directed The Marvels

If you’re unfamiliar with her work, the follow-up to 28 Years Later won’t be Nia DeCosta’s first rodeo in film or horror. She recently directed and co-wrote The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani.

She also directed the contemporary spiritual sequel to the 1992 cult horror classic Candyman. DeCosta’s work on Candyman earned her the accomplishment of becoming the first Black female director to open at the top of the U.S. charts.

From Months To Years

Though the revival of the 28 Days Later story took nearly 20 years and a couple of title changes to finally come to fruition, it looks like it’s really going to happen this time.

If you’re a fan of the series, then you know that the original title for the movie was going to be 28 Months Later.

Part Of The Trilogy

Settling on 28 Years Later (no word on the title of Nia DeCosta’s follow-up just yet) for the title of the upcoming film was a nod to the fact that it took so long to get the movie into production.

In 2007, just after the release of 28 Weeks Later, the third movie in the series was confirmed for “potential” development, but it never went much further. In 2010, Garland said that the movie was “delayed.”

28 Years Later In The Works

Hopes for the making of 28 Years Later went up and down for many years until in March 2020 and 2021, Imogen Poots and Cillian Murphy publicly expressed interest in reprising their roles in the upcoming sequel.

Now, in 2024, production is in the works.
