Come ye not between a Sorcerer Supreme and his adoring fans! That could, possibly, be what a more flowery-speeched version of Dr. Stephen Strange might have said at the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. While we’re pretty sure that isn’t what Benedict Cumberbatch said at the premiere, he nevertheless didn’t let anything — including his own security detail — get in the way of the screaming Marvel fandom.

You can witness Benedict Cumberbatch’s race with his own security in a video uploaded to Twitter yesterday by Binge Watch This. The video opens with the Doctor Strange actor running down a closed-off street to the excited screams of fans. His security detail runs after him, clearly not happy about having to chase after their own client. Cumberbatch bows graciously to the fans and eventually turns around, slowly making his way back up the street. At one point, he stops and turns back around to pose for fans’ pictures. You can see the video below.

To hardcore fans of Benedict Cumberbatch, this clip is likely no surprise. The actor has a reputation for working overtime to show his gratitude and love for his fans. A classic example is found in a 2013 episode of The Graham Norton Show in which the host polled the audience to see how far different audience members had come, and which guest they’d come to see — Cumberbatch or Chris Pine. When one fan reveals she came all the way from Germany on a bus to London to see the Sherlock star, the actor races into the crowd to give her a hug. Norton warns Cumberbatch, “You’ve started something now,” and he isn’t wrong. Soon more fans stand declaring they’ve come from as far as Nebraska and even Hong Kong to get their own Benedict hugs. By the end, Cumberbatch gets in some good cardio.

Judging by the reaction Benedict Cumberbatch gets from fans at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, you’d almost guess it was named Doctor Strange: No Way Home instead. Indeed, his character seems to have a pretty prominent role in the film. Judging by all the film’s trailers, the trouble starts when Doctor Strange agrees to cast a spell that will force the world to forget that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are the same person. Something goes wrong — in part, it seems, because of Peter’s interference with the spell’s casting — that somehow weakens the boundaries between different parts of Marvel’s Multiverse.

While Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will be facing the threats of villains from previous Spider-Man movies such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, there has been speculation that Benedict Cumberbatch’s hero may face his own new villain in No Way Home. In a TV spot released by Sony India, Doctor Strange can be seen using his magic to create runes similar to the ones characters like Agatha Harkness and Wanda Maximoff use in Disney+’s WandaVision. In that series the runes are used to create a space in which other spell casters can’t wield magic. If Strange is using them for the same reason, it implies there’s another sorcerer in Spider-Man: No Way Home, yet none of the villains revealed so far have mystic origins.

We’ll know for sure soon enough. Starring Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, and plenty of other stars, Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters this Friday, December 17. Considering No Way Home is this year’s last MCU film, its events are sure to lead in to those of 2022’s first Marvel movie — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
