There has been a lot of speculation about how Christopher Nolan’s long-time collaborator will do once he is directing a film of his own, but it seems Wally Pfister is up for the challenge. His debut film, Transcendence, is close to finishing casting and has its sights set on beginning principal photography this April. Now Warner Bros. has announced a release date for the film.

According to Deadline, Transcendence will be released in theaters on April 25, 2014, about one year after the film goes into production. This will give Pfister and his film some breathing room, because The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will kick off the summer movie season one week later on May 2nd.

The film recently cast Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany to play scientists working to combine human intelligence with computer technology. But when one of the scientists (most likely Johnny Depp) is assassinated, his colleagues try to upload his brain into a supercomputer. Emily Blunt, Rebecca Hall, and Rooney Mara have all been rumored to join the cast of Transcendence, likely to play the dead scientist’s wife.

First-time screenwriter Jack Paglen’s script was also on the so-called Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced scripts last year, so Transcendence seems to have quality going for it, at least on the script level. Wally Pfister has a keen eye when it comes to lighting a scene and is known for his dynamic camera work. He won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Inception in 2010. Christopher Nolan and his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas, will serve as the film’s executive producers.

Transcendence will open in theaters everywhere on April 25, 2014.
