Blood Glacier Clip Goes To The Dogs

Oh hey, today is Earth Day, who knew. Because I’m sure I’m not the only one who didn’t realize it was a holiday that’s more made up Valentine’s, IFC Midnight has given all of you a present in the form of a twisted new clip from their upcoming Blood Glacier. This is my new favorite way to celebrate Earth Day, and perhaps, if I happen to remember, I’ll make watching this movie an annual tradition in the years to come.

The clip first appeared at Shock Til You Drop, and shows off some of the practical special effects that have been rather hyped up among fans of that sort of thing. There have been differing reports about how good these actually are from folks who have seen the film, ranging from fantastic to schlocky. Honestly, I’m good either way. If these turn out to be really good, high quality creatures, great, but if they’re hokey and full of schlock, I can dig that, too. And from the look of what we’ve seen from the film, my guess is that it skews towards the latter. Just refer to the title of the film if you need further evidence.

You can also tell that the monster in Blood Glacier is a total dick. How do you know this? Because it kills the dog. Only the absolute worst among horrible mutant beasts and evildoers kill the dog. You can get away with just about anything, but the dog is off limits.

Here is the official synopsis of Blood Glacier:

Working in a remote outpost of the German Alps, technician Janek and a cohort of scientists are stunned to discover a bleeding blood glacier parked high up in the mountain range. As the gory infected berg melts the blood attracts the local wildlife only to transform them into hellish hybrids and monstrous mutations. As this fusion of nightmarish creatures evolves in the life-giving mountain air, a second group including Janek’s ex-girlfriend advance towards the base in what will become a showdown of humans vs. nature upended into giant wood lice, beetle-foxes, crossbreed flying predators and much, much worse. Imagine every creature that makes you shiver fused into one and meet your ultimate fears up at… Blood Glacier!

You may remember that creepy wordless trailer that dropped earlier this month for director Marvin Kren’s crazy ass adventure. The film definitely calls to mind movies like John Carpenter’s The Thing, both in terms of content as well as aesthetics. That is a quick and easy way to capture our full, undivided attention.

As creepy as the idea of bleeding glacier that turns everything it touches into a disgusting, bloodthirsty monster is, what makes it even eerier is that the imagery is based on something that actually exists in the world. Blood Falls, in the Taylor Valley region of Antarctica, is a sight to behold if you haven’t. A plume of salt water, tainted by iron oxide, which makes it red, occasionally forces its way to the surface of the glacier and gives the appearance that the ice is in fact bleeding. The effect is both spectacular and horrifying, like something straight out of the mind of H.P. Lovecraft.

Blood Glacier hits VOD and a limited number of movie theaters on May 2.
