Zendaya is caught up in a love triangle in the trailer for the film, Challengers.
In her short yet remarkable career, Zendaya has played the roles of Spider-Man’s love interest, a drug-addicted teenager, and a ruler of the galaxy. Now, she’s going to play a sexy tennis star in the R-rated film Challengers that’s going to hit theaters on September 15, 2023. The young actress shared the film’s trailer with her 182 million Instagram followers with the simple caption, “CHALLENGERS….September 15th.”
In the trailer, we see that Zendaya plays a fictional tennis star named Tassi who seems to fall in love with two fellow male tennis athletes—at the same time. In one scene, Zendaya is seen sitting with both young men on the floor of a hotel room before inviting them both to join her in bed. The two men eagerly scamper over to her, ready to indulge in a ménage à trois.
The rest of the trailer focuses on how Zendaya’s relationship progresses with one of the young men, leading to their eventual marriage. This seems to cause a rift in the friendship between the two young men who were once close friends in their throuple with Zendaya.
While Challengers promises to deliver lots of drama and intimacy, it will also have a lot of tennis action. In the trailer, we see that Zendaya badly hurts her knee during a tennis match, causing her to have to end her career potentially. Meanwhile, her husband continues playing for the two of them, and will most likely go up against his former friend and his wife’s former lover.
The Instagram post has gotten lots of attention, gaining five million likes and over 28,000 comments in just one day. Even Instagram’s account commented, “new zendaya movie? say no more,” and actress Kerry Washington simply commented, “WOW.”
Most of the comments draw attention to Zendaya’s relationship with long-time boyfriend and fellow Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland. The comments range from gif reactions of Tom Holland crying to users giving Zendaya praise for what looks to be a wonderful performance. However, other users are commenting on how “white” the movie looks and that the writing may not be very good.
The two men who portray Zendaya’s love interests are Josh O’Connor, who plays Patrick, and Mike Faist, who plays Art. British actor Josh O’Connor is best known for his work on God’s Own Country, Emma., and his performance of Prince Charles on the TV series The Crown. Tony-nominated actor Mike Faist is best known for his roles in 2021’s West Side Story, The Atlantic City Story, and Wildlings.
The director behind Challengers is Luca Guadagnino who is known for working closely with Zendaya’s Dune co-star Timothée Chalamet films Call Me by Your Name and Bones and All. The Italian filmmaker typically includes a lot of emotional complexity and sensuality in his films, and it looks like Challengers will be no exception.
After her performances in HBO’s hit TV show Euphoria and the R-rated Malcolm & Marie, we feel confident that Zendaya is the perfect fit for the intimate Luca Guadagnino film.
