Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker

Folks may have been seeing double inside the Beverly Hilton for the Golden Globes as the two current Jokers appeared side by side for a photo op and casual conversation. Sharing a set of shots to his Instagram, Saltburn star, Barry Keoghan, posted two images of him standing with Joaquin Phoenix. Both men have recently appeared as Batman’s arch nemesis the Joker with Keoghan portraying the villain for a brief moment in Matt Reeves’s 2022 flick, The Batman, and Phoenix in Todd Phillips’s Joker

With Matt Reeves back to the drawing board for what will become The Batman 2, audiences will likely see Barry Keoghan back in the role of Joker, makeup and all.

Both of the actors dazzled at the prestigious event with Barry Keoghan decked out in a red Louis Vuitton suit and Joaquin Phoenix keeping things classic in white and black. In his caption, Keoghan wrote “Just havin’ a laugh” with a clown emoji, nodding to the pair’s depictions of Joker.

With Matt Reeves back to the drawing board for what will become The Batman 2, audiences will likely see Barry Keoghan back in the role of Joker, makeup and all. Reeves’s take on the caped crusader, played by Robert Pattinson, harkens back to Tim Burton’s two films from 1989 and 1992 before the studio decided his vision was a touch too dark for them. Fast-forward three decades and audiences are eager for more of that dark edge to their superhero films.

As for Joaquin Phoenix, audiences are eager to see his return to the unstable character in the upcoming production, Joker: Folie à Deux which is set to arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024.

While he didn’t appear as the character for long, Barry Keoghan’s Joker had viewers talking after the credits rolled for The Batman. The film’s primary antagonist was the Riddler played by Paul Dano as well as Colin Farrell’s Penguin with Keoghan’s villainous reveal in the movie’s final moments. While no plot details for The Batman 2 have been revealed at this time, it seems that the Joker’s introduction will lead into a bigger role in the sequel.

With two Jokers already in the mix, there’s a good possibility that a third will be on the way down the line with James Gunn and Peter Safran remolding the DCU.

As for Joaquin Phoenix, audiences are eager to see his return to the unstable character in the upcoming production, Joker: Folie à Deux which is set to arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024. A sequel to 2019’s Joker, the second installment will also feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn with Zazie Beetz reprising her role as Sophie Dumond from the first feature. Todd Phillips returns as the project’s director, promising another twisted tale in the life of Arthur Fleck, the man who would become known as the Joker.

With two Jokers already in the mix, there’s a good possibility that a third will be on the way down the line with James Gunn and Peter Safran remolding the DCU. Although they’ve already made changes to the actors behind characters like Superman, it seems that, at least for now, Keoghan and Phoenix’s jobs are safe. Falling under the Elseworlds banner, both The Batman 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux, are separate projects from the team’s Gods and Monsters chapter.

And, while we can’t speak to the future of Phoenix or Keoghan’s run as the maniacal bad guy, the original Joker film was slated to be a standalone project so, the sequel could either lead to a trilogy or end the series. Likewise, it’s unclear what lies ahead for Matt Reeves’s ties to DC Studios, putting Keoghan and the rest of The Batman’s future up in the air.
