The final trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped last night and while we got to see plenty more of the bad guys Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will be facing, the hoped-for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield versions of Spider-Man were no-shows. Or were they? At least one eagle-eyed TikTokker suggests the previous Spider-Men were actually in at least one of the shots in the trailer, but were digitally edited out.

With over 560,000 followers, TikTokker Marvel Easter Eggs has proven to have interesting insights on Marvel Cinematic Universe entries new and old. In this case, the influencer noticed that toward the end of the new trailer — starting at around the 2 minute and 20 second mark — there’s a shot of Spider-Man throwing himself towards three of the movie’s villains: Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard. But as the villains attack, they seem to be targeting people who aren’t there. In particular, the Lizard is nowhere near Spidey and isn’t even facing him, yet he has a claw pulled back ready to strike empty air. The implication, of course, is that when the movie hits theaters the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield versions of Spider-Man will join Tom Holland in the shot, but they were digitally erased from the trailer. Marvel Easter Egg’s insight adds yet more fuel to the fire that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be reprising their roles as Spider-Man in the upcoming film. Not to mention that the trailer overall seems to lend credence to supposedly leaked photos that purported to show the two actors in costume on the the set of No Way Home earlier this month. Both the photos and an earlier leaked video show the heroes amidst metal railings, catwalks, and scaffolding. The new trailer prominently features a Statue of Liberty being redesigned with Captain America’s shield thrown into the mix. The landmark is completely encased in similar scaffolding and catwalks, and quite a bit of the action seems to take place there.

If Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are in that shot, it would hardly be the first time Marvel has used its trailers to mess with fan expectation. ComicBook lists a number of examples of Marvel trailers that were edited to fool fans. In trailer shots from the final battle in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth’s face was edited to conceal the fact that his character had lost an eye. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was edited out of the earlier trailers for 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. And of course there were the trailers for 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War that included shots that didn’t even exist in the finished film — like a full team of Avengers in Wakanda, including the Hulk who physically doesn’t appear in the film after his defeat at Thanos’ hands.

We’ll know for sure about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s appearances in the film soon enough. Spider-Man: No Way Home will finally release in theaters a month from today on Friday, December 17. For Spidey fans, it’s looking like some very happy holidays indeed.
