Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi has a new show, and this entry sees the director go full-on co-star in the hilarious new pirate comedy for HBO and HBO Max. Our Flag Means Death has just dropped a brand-new trailer and from the quick 2:30 seconds shown, we are treated to what looks to be What We Do in the Shadows on the high seas. Perennial funny man, Rhys Darby, is set to take on the role of Stede Bonnet, a socialite who finds himself being mixed up with pirates of the worst degree. One of the legendary pirates among those ranks is Blackbeard, who is being portrayed by none other than Watiti. Check out the trailer below:

Taika Waititi is usually behind the camera for the majority of the shows and movies that he is involved with, usually handling acting and directing duties. However, he is set to only produce the new show, as well as playing the dreaded pirate, Blackbeard. The trailer shows a ton of hilarious instances, including the aforementioned Blackbeard getting whipped in his…cannonballs. You have to hand it to the makeup department, as Taika looks fantastic with a massive beard and loads of tattoos.

The hilarious new trailer showcases more of a deeper look into the socialite life of Stede Bonnet, as he tries to understand or infiltrate the lives of hardened pirates. Darby’s line about “killing with kindness” versus just actually killing people is fantastic. Taika Waititi has a bit more bass in his voice as Blackbeard, but his dry humor is still on full display. The cast is chock full of comedy actors including Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones. This show is certainly going to be a lot of fun.

Both Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi are from New Zealand, and this isn’t the first time that the pair will be working with one another. Darby played a werewolf on the Waititi-made What We do in the Shadows movie that was released in 2014. A subsequent show of the same name, which is also based on the movie, first aired on FX in 2019. It currently has three seasons, with the fourth coming sometime in 2022. Simply put, anything that Waititi touches is gold, pirate pun intended. Both men are the perfect pairing of hilarity and ridiculousness, and it’s good to see them working together, especially as co-stars.

Our Flag Means Death is set to air on HBO and HBO Max starting on March 3rd, with three episodes being released at once. The following three episodes will be released on March 10th, with two more on both March 17th and March 24th. The grand total for this first season is set at 10 episodes, but it is likely to garner another season once it airs. This is truly an odd way of releasing episodes, but at least everyone won’t have to wait for a one-episode weekly release. Binge a couple of episodes at a time with this quirky release schedule. We should expect nothing less from the mind of Taika Waititi.
