Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

With a career as lengthy as Salma Hayek’s, the critically-acclaimed actress has seen her fair share of cinematic hits. Now, fans can catch her in animated form alongside Antonio Banderas in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish as it’s currently streaming on Netflix. Making waves with users of the platform, the popular DreamWorks Animation feature has landed itself among other favorites on the Top 10.

Dueling its way into theaters at the tail end of 2022, the movie marked the return of the titular swashbuckling cat who was first introduced in the Shrek franchise before landing his own spin-off in 2011 titled Puss in Boots.

Salma Hayek‘s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is in the Netflix Top 10.

Along with Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas was back to reprise his leading role in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with other voicings by Florence Pugh, Harvey Guillén, Olivia Colman, John Mulaney, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ray Winstone, Anthony Mendez, Wagner Moura, and Samson Kayo.

Getting the gang back together and adding some new names to the list, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) form new alliances in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish as they are joined by Harvey Guillén’s Perrito to go on a quest for the Last Wish for the Wishing Star in order to restore Puss in Boots’ first eight of nine lives before he is vanquished for good.

But, the trio has some competition along the way with Goldilocks and the Three Bears Crime Family (Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone, Olivia Colman, and Samson Kayo) and “Big” Jack Horner (John Mulaney) taking it for their own. Meanwhile, a big bad wolf (Wagner Moura) is on the loose, seeming to be yet another foe in the way of Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito.

Puss In Boots at the Box Office

An immediate box office hit, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, and the rest of the team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish struck gold when the film, which had a production budget of $90-110 million, raked in a whopping $484.8 million during its theatrical run. Raking in honor after honor, the film would nab a slew of award nominations including an Academy Award, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nod for Best Animated Feature.

Directed by Joel Crawford, the return of Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas’ fan-favorite characters was in great and competent hands as the filmmaker previously backed works including Trolls Holiday and The Croods: A New Age.

He also holds credits as a story artist in a slew of productions such as Bee Movie, the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Shrek Forever After, Rise of the Guardians, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

As for Salma Hayek’s involvement in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, while the actress may be well known for her dramatic and comedic live-action roles, her takeover of the animated genre through the Shrek franchise has proven her a force to be reckoned with in the voiceover game.

The Frida star has also been heard in projects including Peter Lord’s The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!, Roger Allers’ The Prophet, and Conrad Vernon and Craig Tiernan’s Sausage Party.

Salma Hayek’s History With Antonio Banderas

A long-lasting friendship spanning decades, Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas’ appearance together in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and even Puss and Boots was far from their first time sharing a screen together.

The duo were first spotted opposite one another in what would become known as the actress’s breakout in Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado and its follow-up feature, Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The duo would again be seen alongside one another in Frida, with Hayek starring in the titular role which would earn her an Academy Award nod, while Banderas held a smaller part.

Again, Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas worked together on the action-packed feature, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over as well as the comedy, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. With such a dedicated and special friendship, it’s no surprise why the critically-celebrated stars have been welcomed back to the sets of Hollywood over and over again to allow their chemistry to play out on screen.

Head over to Netflix to join the rest of the crowd as they boost Puss in Boots: The Last Wish onto the streamer’s Top 10 list.
