Michelle Yeoh’s year is off to a great start, and now we’ve got more positive news about her Star Trek series Section 31. Producer Alex Kurtzman told SFX Magazine in a recent interview, “I can tell you that we’re still very excited about Section 31,” adding, “And that’s all I will say” (via CBR). While that’s not a lot to go off of, it does appear that the Paramount+ series is still in the works.

Michelle Yeoh’s character first appeared in Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou, eventually playing the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (the Mirror universe counterpart) after Captain Philippa Georgiou was killed off. Yeoh is set to reprise the role of Mirror Georgiou in the Section 31 spin-off, which follows her adventures in the titular shadowy Starfleet division.

Along with having Michelle Yeoh on board to star in Section 31, the series would see Kurtzman return as an executive producer and Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt coming on board as co-showrunners. So, what’s the hold-up on Section 31, and why is the news drip so slow on this series? It’s likely because there are still five Star Trek shows currently airing.

Paramount has previously indicated that there wouldn’t be any new Star Trek shows introduced until at least one of the current series ended. That will be happening very soon, as Star Trek: Picard is currently airing its final season, and it was recently announced that Star Trek: Discovery‘s upcoming season would be its last. With two slots clearing up in Paramount’s Star Trek lineup, Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 series should be well on its way.

Now would be the perfect time for Paramount to introduce a series that stars Michelle Yeoh if the company wants to capitalize on her recent massive successes. Yeoh just won her first Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and her star is as big as ever. The film also won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.

Michelle Yeoh will surely be in higher demand than ever, so Paramount would be smart to make sure the series is a go and announce something official soon. Yeoh will undoubtedly be busy, considering she’s set to appear in the upcoming sequels to the massively successful Avatar: The Way of Water. Currently, Yeoh is set to appear in Avatar 3 as a scientist and could reprise the role in the subsequent fourth and fifth Avatar movies.

Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 isn’t the only Star Trek series reportedly in the works, as Paramount is also working on a series set at Starfleet Academy. With several series in the barrel, Paramount will likely announce something soon enough to excite fans. Perhaps the company is waiting to make the announcement until Picard is officially over.

While we wait to hear more about the Michell Yeoh Star Trek spin-off, you can catch the current lineup of shows on Paramount+. Picard is currently airing its final season, and you can catch the final season of Discovery in 2024. Stay tuned for more news on these and all other Star Trek shows.
