If you’re looking for a light-hearted film to kick your weekend off, look no further than Amazon Freevee as FlixPatrol reveals that the ‘80s classic, Back to the Future is now streaming. Kicking off his film career, the Robert Zemeckis-helmed feature would push Michael J. Fox from the small to the big screen in the time-hopping project in which he starred alongside Christopher Lloyd.

Considered a classic piece of cinema, the 1985 feature isn’t one to miss while it’s available on the Amazon platform.

Zemeckis’ iconic piece of sci-fi material sees California teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) on the ride of his life after an experiment conducted by his friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes horribly wrong.

Zooming back through time in a DeLorean, the duo finds themselves trapped in the 1950s, where Marty comes face-to-face with younger versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson). Now, not only is Marty tasked with helping Doc get them back to their time, but he also needs to make sure that his parents will fall in love because otherwise, he’ll be wiped from the timeline.

Distributed by Universal Studios, the picture was an immediate hit, grossing a whopping $388.8 million at the box office against its $19 million production budget.

Back to the Future

Even though it was passed on several times by other studios who believed there was no way that it could compete with other similar titles of the decade, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd’s on-screen buddy chemistry and the Zemeckis and Bob Gale co-penned script put them all to shame, giving Universal a boatload of cash and groundwork for not one but two follow-up features.

Just a few years later, in 1989, the gang was back with Back to the Future Part II, which saw the iconic duo on yet another time-jumping adventure. Instead of going into the past, this time, Michael J. Fox’s Marty and Christopher Lloyd’s Doc went into the future to the year 2015 to ensure that Marty’s son wouldn’t ruin the McFly family’s future.

Reprising his role as the bully Biff Tannen from the first film, Thomas F. Wilson’s bad guy returned for the second film as the villain who steals the DeLorean for his own use, setting the timeline on a crash course with disaster.

The sequel was once again a huge box office earner for the studio, racking in a whopping $332.5 million against its $40 million budget and once again proving that audiences love a good sci-fi comedy.

Again, jumping on what would become the final film of Zemeckis’ trilogy, Universal gave the green light for Back to the Future Part III, which would be the last time (for now) that Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reprised their roles.

In the final title in the trilogy, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd star alongside Mary Steenburgen, Lea Thompson, and Thomas F. Wilson, and pick up immediately following the events of the second film.

Back to the Future Part III

Trapped in 1955, Marty McFly discovers that not only is Doc stuck in 1885 but that he’s been killed by Biff’s great-grandfather. Racing through time to bring his pal back to 1985, Marty hops back to the 1800s to save Doc and restore the timeline once and for all.

The Back to the Future franchise was one of the many highlights of Michael J. Fox’s long-running Hollywood career, with the star also appearing in the sitcom Family Ties during the duration of the trilogy.

The ‘80s saw him become not only a household name but also a heartthrob, leading other projects including Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, and Casualties of War. Following the wrap of Family Ties and Zemeckis’ sci-fi films, Fox would go on to appear in ‘90s films like Doc Hollywood and The Frighteners as well as the ABC sitcom Spin City.

The Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Grammy Award-winning performer told the world in 1998 that he was living with Parkinson’s Disease. Not allowing his condition to slow him down, Michael J. Fox continued to pursue his passion in films like the Stuart Little franchise and shows including The Good Wife, The Good Fight, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In 2021, Fox officially retired from acting with Apple TV+, recently releasing a documentary on his life titled, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. Check out Back to the Future right now – for free – while you still can.
