Marky Mark is going back to the stars and this time he hopefully won’t find a world full of apes when he gets back. Our trusted and proven sources tell us Mark Wahlberg has signed on as lead star and producer for Cosmic Odyssey, a sci-fi epic and Netflix original. The film will be directed by Brad Peyton (San Andreas), known best for his frequent collaborations with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

We’ve exclusively learned Mark Wahlberg will star in and produce the sci-fi epic film Cosmic Odyssey for Netflix.

Our sources say that Mark Wahlberg will play Captain Alex Volkov in Cosmic Odyssey, the commander of the starship Solaris Nexus. The mission of Volkov and his crew is to search for a new planet that will allow humanity to survive. Along the way, Volkov encounters a number of enigmatic alien civilizations who will no doubt make his quest more complicated.

At the very least, Mark Wahlberg’s signing on to Cosmic Odyssey is arguably a bold move for the Father Stu star. While it might be a stretch to call sci-fi Wahlberg’s Achilles’ heel, the genre hasn’t been the kindest to the actor.

Two of Wahlberg’s most spectacular critical and commercial flops — 2021’s Infinite and 2001’s Planet of the Apes — were also two of his only science fiction films. Both 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction and 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight fared better at the box office, but neither were particularly well received by critics or audiences.

It’s worth mentioning that unlike Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming turn in Cosmic Odyssey, his Transformers films were part of a tested blockbuster franchise.

Brad Peyton’s Sci-Fi Credentials

By joining Mark Wahlberg in Cosmic Odyssey as director, Brad Peyton is tackling subject matter that is increasingly becoming a bigger part of his wheelhouse. Cosmic Odyssey will be Peyton’s first time directing a spacefaring epic, but he’s been working in sci-fi for years and seems to be drifting more and more into futuristic science fiction.

Peyton’s resume already includes directing the 2018 video game adaptation Rampage and the Netflix post apocalyptic dramedy Daybreak, and his upcoming announced projects come closer to futuristic sci-fi like Mark Wahlberg’s Cosmic Odyssey.

Last November, Peyton wrapped principal photography on the Netflix dystopian sci-fi thriller Atlas starring Jennifer Lopez (The Mother) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Meanwhile, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) is set to play an intergalactic peacekeeper rounding up alien criminals in the Peyton-helmed Universe’s Most Wanted.

Once we’ve learned more about Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming role in Cosmic Odyssey, we’ll make sure you know.
