Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have finally released the official trailer for Malignant. The terrifying horror thriller is the brainchild of James Wan, architect of The Conjuring Universe, who returns to his roots with a completely new story he created with Ingrid Bisu and Akela Cooper.

Malignant tells the story of Madison (Annabelle Wallis) who is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders. Unfortunately, her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are actually terrifying realities.

When Madison starts to investigate the mysterious circumstances around her visions, she discovers the killer could be linked to her traumatic past and is possibly the devil incarnate. There’s also an interesting twist that makes it seem like the murders are being carried out by Madison’s childhood imaginary friend.

The Malignant trailer features Madison as she experiences these supernatural visions where she sees a dark evil entity murdering several people. Now, it’s up to her to figure out how to stop this entity from further wrecking havoc before it’s too late.

Malignant is directed by James Wan from a screenplay by Akela Cooper, who is also currently penning the script for The Nun 2. The film was produced by Wan and Michael Clear, with Eric McLeod, Judson Scott, Bisu, Peter Luo, Cheng Yang, Mandy Yu, and Lei Han serving as executive producers. The film’s score is composed by Joseph Bishara, who worked on the music for all seven films in The Conjuring Universe.

Malignant stars Conjuring Universe alum Annabelle Wallis alongside, George Young (Containment), Maddie Hasson (Mr. Mercedes), Michole Briana White (Encino Man), Jacqueline McKenzie (Pine Gap), Jake Abel (Supernatural), Ingrid Bisu (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) and McKenna Grace (Annabelle Comes Home).

With James Wan at the creative helm, Malignant is sure to be a success. The director has an impressive list of film credits that have been loved by fans and critics over the years. Beginning his career with the Saw franchise, James Wan made his feature directorial debut with its first film in 2004. The movies became a pop culture phenomenon and earned more than $1 billion at the global box office.

Following a period of setbacks, Wan returned with the Insidious movies, directing the first film in 2010 and its sequel. In 2013 he directed the first Conjuring film which was met with critical and commercial success. He served as the director of the second installment in 2016 while producing subsequent films in the franchise.

Outside of horror, Wan directed 2015’s Furious 7, the seventh installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, and the DC Extended Universe film Aquaman in 2018. Both earned over $1 billion, making him the eighth director with two films to reach the milestone. As of 2021, James Wan is also the 20th highest-grossing director of all time, with his movies earning over $3.6 billion worldwide

Malignant will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on September 10th, by Warner Bros. Pictures under the New Line Cinema banner.
