Auteur filmmaker James Cameron is well known to have a deep affinity for the vast expanse of the ocean. From his early days as a filmmaker helming The Abyss to his most recent outing, Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron has always been passionate and excited to share deep sea discoveries, both real and fictional, with his massive audience of fans. Now, Cameron has teamed with Marvel star Paul Rudd to produce a documentary about the octopus, the so-called most mysterious creature on Earth.

James Cameron and Paul Rudd have expressed a newfound appreciation for the octopus after filming the series.

The Secrets of the Octopus trailer was released this week via the official National Geographic YouTube channel, revealing that James Cameron will be directing the special event, with Paul Rudd providing fascinating narration. The limited series comes on the heels of similar projects such as Secrets of the Elephants which was narrated by Natalie Portman, and Secrets of the Whales, narrated by Sigourney Weaver. The series is set to follow National Geographic explorers as they plunge into the depths of the ocean to study and educate the masses about the mysterious habits and lives of octopuses.

James Cameron has done extensive work with the National Geographic platform in the past, himself donning wet suits and submersible controls in order to dive into the most untrodden locations on the planet. Cameron famously journeyed to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2012, making him one of only half a dozen explorers to explore the region. As Paul Rudd points out in his narration within the Secrets of the Octopus trailer, octopus are some of the most incredible creatures known to man, with the ability to shape-shift, camouflage, and contort their squishy invertebrate bodies.

Secrets of the Octopus will premiere on National Geographic before being made available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the next day.

James Cameron and Paul Rudd have also expressed interesting perspectives on the docuseries while discussing Secrets of the Octopus with media outlets in recent days. Rudd explained that he was blown away by the brilliance that the creatures seem to display, remarking that the eight-legged ocean dwellers truly exhibit a human level of intellect and curiosity. Additional series’ such as Secrets of the Penguins and Secrets of the Bees have already been announced to follow soon, though there is no word at this time whether James Cameron and Paul Rudd are set to bring their respective talents back for the upcoming productions. The Secrets of the Octopus series is slated to consist of three episodes, first premiering on April 21. ‘
