Combining Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and writer-director Martin McDonagh seems to be a winning formula because their most recent effort currently has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Banshees of Inisherin is the first collaboration between the three since 2008’s In Bruges, which is a cinematic classic in its own right. After its 13-minute standing ovation at Venice Film Festival, it’s no surprise that The Banshees of Inisherin is getting such impressive reviews.

The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell as Pádraic and Brendan Gleeson as Colm, two lifelong friends whose friendship is abruptly ended by Colm. Pádraic refuses to let the friendship end and works to repair their relationship, only causing Colm to commit more to his decision. Along with Farrell and Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin stars Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

This will only be the fourth feature film from writer-director Martin McDonagh, who has drawn critical acclaim for all three of his previous films. In fact, Seven Psychopaths (which also starred Colin Farrell), was the only one of the three to miss out on some Oscar nominations. With the buzz that The Banshees of Inisherin is getting, it seems like it’s a shoo-in for some awards and maybe even a win for McDonagh, Farrell, or Gleeson.

Even if he doesn’t score any Oscar nominations, Colin Farrell is having a great year. In addition to starring in a critically acclaimed drama, he found blockbuster success as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. With the success of that movie, it seems pretty likely we can expect to see Farrell in the sequel.

But before the sequel arrives, Colin Farrell will get a chance to star in his own solo series as the Penguin in a currently untitled spin-off as HBO Max. Warner Discovery has been notoriously picky about DC and what projects they’re allowing to move forward, so you’d have to assume that this one is shaping up to be pretty good. The series will be following Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham, so it could be setting up some big things for Farrell’s future in the Batman franchise.

Details of the untitled Penguin series are being kept pretty close to the vest, but Colin Farrell recently revealed in an interview that the series will pick up almost immediately after the events of The Batman, with the Penguin wading through the flooded office of Falcone. The series isn’t scheduled to come out until the Fall of 2023, so we have a while to wait. Fortunately, we have The Banshees of Inisherin right around the corner to keep us entertained until then.

The Banshees of Inisherin hits theaters on today, so if you’re looking for the perfect movie to go see this weekend, it seems like this is the right choice. With many saying that Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson give career-best performances, it definitely seems like it’s near the top of the list for must-see films this year. Make sure to check it out while you can.
