The upcoming Colin Farrell-starring series based on his version of the Penguin has been keeping its cards pretty close to the chest, but Farrell recently gave fans an enticing bit of info about the beginning of the show. According to Farrell, the show will take place about a week after the events of The Batman, meaning the city is still flooded. Farrell adds that the opening scene of the first episode will see him splashing through Carmine Falcone’s office.

Craig Zobel will be on board to direct Colin Farrell in The Penguin series and it will be set in the Gotham that Matt Reeves created in The Batman. The Batman had a lot of great things going for it, with Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Paul Dano all bringing great performances to the table. The cinematography and atmosphere of the film were also fantastic, so it’s no surprise that Warner is wanting to return to this setting after it was so warmly received by fans.

An entire series focused on Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin is a great way for us to have more time to explore Gotham and how its underworld works. The Penguin could be a good way to show Cobblepot rising to one of the top villains in Gotham, making him a formidable addition to the sequel to The Batman. While we know that Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves are returning for the sequel, it seems like Farrell would return in some capacity as well.

Right now, there’s sort of a ‘Tale of Two DCs’ going on at Warner Discovery. On one side, you have projects like The Batman and Colin Farrell’s Penguin series and on another, you have DC’s continued push toward a connected blockbuster universe. In other words, the continuity and timelines over at DC Films are kind of a mess.

Seemingly, there is no relation between The Batman, the Colin Farrell Penguin series, and the rest of DC’s projects. After all, we still have Ben Affleck appearing as Batman in future DC movies and Michael Keaton returning to the role of Batman as well. While it seems like DC is playing with the multiverse a little, there are a lot of different versions of the most notable villains and superheroes to keep track of.

In addition to having three Batmen at the moment, DC has multiple Jokers and soon there will be multiple Harley Quinns as well. The, again, largely separate, Todd Philips-directed and Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker is getting a sequel with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Along with Colin Farrell’s Penguin, Matt Reeves also introduced Barry Keoghan as another Joker, so it’s unclear how that all works out.

Colin Farrell’s upcoming Penguin series is set to hit HBO Max sometime in 2023, but we won’t have to wait nearly that long to see another project from the Irish actor. Farrell will be reuniting with Brendan Gleeson and director/writer Martin McDonagh for the upcoming The Banshees of Inisherin. The Banshees of Inisherin‘s release is right around the corner, as it comes out on October 21.
