At the 2023 SAG Awards, a perfect pairing on the same level as pineapple and pizza was discovered when Aubrey Plaza and Jenna Ortega shared the podium in a hilariously awkward moment despite how the two “have nothing in common.” Of course, they have the same amazing capacity for deadpan humor, and following Ortega’s breakout performance in Wednesday, it’s only fitting that the two should star in a project together. Thankfully, the star of Emily the Criminal has a great plan: a murder movie.

On the red carpet, reporter Denny Directo from Entertainment Tonight asked the right question and got Aubrey Plaza to suggest the murderous team-up where she and Jenna Ortega kill everybody with their eyes. Given the creepy stares each is capable of, it’s very easy to see how they could murder with nothing else. Granted, their characters would also have to be snarky, world-weary, and always act like they have something better to do.

Part of the joke of the clip is that they don’t understand who put them together, but in reality, it was a very smart person that created an instant viral moment. Plaza sounded down for the team-up movie; now all we need is a writer, a producer, and a director to make it happen. Sure, each actress is busy with plenty of projects, but no one can deny the amazing chemistry already on display between the two fan favorites.

Aubrey Plaza’s next film is Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre for Amazon alongside Jason Statham, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, and Hugh Grant. Playing computer expert Sarah, Plaza is part of a team of experts tasked to retrieve a device from an arms dealer before it falls into the wrong hands. Basically, it’s a heist film, which is something different for Plaza in her career, but hopefully, she doesn’t stray too far from the deadpan snark that fans love.

Jenna Ortega’s filmography as a Scream Queen is impressive, ranging from Scream V and X to the comedic Foo Fighter’s film Studio 666; she’s often the victim and rarely the killer. Scream VI may change that, as the franchise loves to pull off twists and turns with the Ghostface Killer. While Ortega has a lot of films coming out soon, most of them have already been filmed, which has to give her time for the greatest buddy horror movie of all time, right?

After all, in addition to similar levels of morbid snark, Aubrey Plaza and Jenna Ortega are both award-winning actresses. At the SAG Awards, each was nominated, Plaza for The White Lotus as part of the ensemble and Ortega for the lead role in Wednesday. The former won, while the latter lost out to Jean Smart in Hacks.

We, the viewing audience, need someone somewhere to create the perfect project for Aubrey Plaza and Jenna Ortega. Even if it’s not a murder movie, the pairing is too good to be restricted to awards shows. How about a Cagney and Lacey remake featuring the two as disaffected detectives in New York for Netflix?

Thelma and Louise is due for a reboot at some point, and the two would be amazing as best friends tearing through the American Mid-West. From a murder movie to a mystery, it doesn’t matter what the pair is doing so long as they are on screen together.
