Arnold Schwarzenegger may have been making waves on Netflix earlier this summer for his very first time starring in a live-action television series in FUBAR, but it’s one of the star’s classic roles that’s getting all the attention now. Audiences can currently catch the Governator in the sci-fi flick, Terminator Genisys in a role that sees him as both a good guy and villain.

Serving as a franchise reboot, the Alan Taylor-directed feature would jumpstart the story all over again, completely disregarding the events of both the sequels and television offshoots.

In Terminator Genisys, Jai Courtney stars as Kyle Reese, a soldier who was sent from 2029 to 1984 to prevent the death of Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Upon arriving in the past, Reese discovers that the all-knowing Skynet has beaten him to the punch and sent a Terminator to ensure her survival.

The film sees Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role as the Terminator with a cast consisting of Matt Smith, Jason Clarke, J.K. Simmons, Courtney B. Vance, Sandrine Holt, Dayo Okeniyi, Michael Gladis, and Lee Byung-hun.

The move to revamp the franchise proved to be a good one for Skydance Productions as the title would rake in a whopping $440.6 million at the global box office.

Striking while the iron was hot, the production team on Terminator Genisys quickly moved forward with their plans to scrap the past and reboot the original storyline after follow-ups were canceled for Terminator Salvation, which was considered to be the fourth film in the franchise.

Grabbing the rights to the story as soon as possible, Skydance Productions went to the first film’s director, James Cameron, for his blessing to take the story from the top and to transfer his vision from the original feature as well as its Arnold Schwarzenegger-led 1991 sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The move to revamp the franchise proved to be a good one for Skydance Productions as the title would rake in a whopping $440.6 million at the global box office against its production budget of $155-$158 million.

This is especially impressive when one considers the sheer amount of special effects that it took not only to bring Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character to life but to also properly display the post-apocalyptic world surrounding the story.

With Double Negative leading the charge on VFX, other teams including Moving Picture Company, Industrial Light & Magic, Method Studios, Lola VFX, and One of Us also chipped in to help bring the visually stunning masterpiece to the big screen.

Facing the same fate as those that had come before it, any plans for a follow-up to Terminator Genisys were left on the cutting room table after its largely negative reviews.

While the heart behind the film was in the right place and the special effects were on the highest level possible, critics didn’t care so much for this revamped version of the original Jams Cameron-helmed story. Slamming the script and direction, few critics had kind words to say about the latest story in the Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted film with many believing that it was time for the tale of Sarah Connor and the killer cyborg to finally come to a close.

Facing the same fate as those that had come before it, any plans for a follow-up to Terminator Genisys were left on the cutting room table after its largely negative reviews. However, the franchise would end up back in the hands of James Cameron who again rebooted the story, this time producing the film, Terminator: Dark Fate, which served as a sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day and negated the plot points that were set in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation, and Terminator Genisys.

Helmed by Tim Miller, the film saw both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton reprise their roles from the original movie but, unfortunately, due to poor box office numbers, has since been the last feature in the franchise.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Return to the Big Screen

Since tossing in the towel on his role in the Terminator films, Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn’t appeared in any more big screen projects. That, however, is set to change later this year when the bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician takes on a role in David Sandberg’s comedy martial arts film, Kung Fury 2.

He will appear alongside a cast that includes Sandberg, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Fassbender, Ralf Moeller, and Jorma Taccone. Appearing in a role only known as “The President,” his part in Sandberg’s movie will merge Schwarzenegger’s love for acting with his call to the political arena.

As for his dip into leading roles in television, Arnold Schwarzenegger saw massive success earlier this year with his part in Netflix’s FUBAR. An action tale mixed with a side of strained family dynamics, the series, which also stars Monica Barbaro, Fortune Feimster, Gabriel Luna, Milan Carter, Travis Van Winkle, and Fabiana Udenio, was recently picked up for a second season by the streamer.

Until you can get your next action fix from the king of high-octane performances, head to Netflix to check out Terminator Genisys.
