According to Variety, A24 has recently signed a contract with Warner Bros. Discovery that gives HBO, Cinemax, and Max exclusive TV and streaming rights to all of the studio’s movies for several years. The entertainment company had previously inked a deal with Showtime, which is owned by Paramount Global, but that deal just came to an end. The agreement was originally reached in 2019, but A24 chose not to renew it and instead signed the new deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.

A24’s new agreement now gives HBO, Max, and Cinemax exclusive rights to distribute the studio’s biggest films following their time in theaters. Those include Priscilla, the Sofia Coppola film following the life of Priscilla Presley, played by Cailee Spaeny alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.

The deal also expands A24’s library of offerings on HBO and Max by adding in excess of 100 titles over the life of the multiyear contract.

Also included is The Iron Claw, the forthcoming biographical film directed by Sean Durkin that features Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White as the world-famous professional wrestling stars the Von Erich brothers, who rose to fame in the 1980s. Also among A24’s cinematic output Is the comedy Dream Scenario, which stars Nicolas Cage and is directed by Kristoffer Borgli.

A24’s HBO, Max, and Cinemax agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery also includes Alex Garland’s forthcoming action film Civil War, which he both wrote and directed for the studio. But new and upcoming films aren’t the only ones included in the recently signed deal. It also encompasses Jonathan Demme’s 1984 film Stop Making Sense, the concert documentary of the band Talking Heads, for which A24 is a distributor.

This also means comedian Larry Charles’ movie Dicks: The Musical will be coming to HBO, Max, and Cinemax, along with director Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding, which she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska. The forthcoming romantic thriller stars Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian as a gym employee and a bisexual bodybuilder, respectively, and explores the sacrifices and work neccessary to succeed in the world of professional bodybuilding. The film’s cast also includes Dave Franco, Jena Malone, and Ed Harris.

Look for A24 films to begin showing up on HBO, Max, and Cinemax within the coming year.

The deal also expands A24’s library of offerings on HBO and Max by adding in excess of 100 titles over the life of the multiyear contract. This will include some of A24’s highest-profile films like The Whale, which won Brendan Fraser an Academy Award for Best Actor last year, as well as pioneering “digital prosthetic makeup” that also won an Oscar.

Perhaps most prestigiously, the deal includes Everything Everywhere All at Once, which went home with an Oscar for Best Picture the same year, along with trophies for Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

A24’s movies in the HBO, Max, and Cinemax agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery also include the Adam Sandler crime thriller Uncut Gems. Celie Song’s 2023 film Past Lives, which concerns two old friends who are torn from one another when one emigrates from South Korea, is a part of the agreement as well. In the film, the pair are unexpectedly reunited years later and must confront love, destiny, and the consequences of life choices.

In a statement regarding the A24 deal with HBO, Max, and Cinemax, Royce Battleman, Executive Vice President of content acquisitions for Warner Bros. Discovery, said their ongoing relationship with the studio will add great value to both HBO and Max. Battleman further cited the diversity of types of films and stories included in the A24 catalog as an important part of the agreement.
