Kurt Cobain’s Cigarettes Going Up For Auction

By Robert Scucci | Published

Kurt Cobain was a lot of things to a lot of people, and his impact on pop culture and music remains staggering to this day. So much, in fact, that a pack of his cigarettes is currently up for auction for nearly $2,000, according to Stereogum. But when it comes to Nirvana memorabilia, we’re talking about chump change compared to the $6 million that the guitar he used during the 1994 “MTV Unplugged in New York” brought in when it was sold back in 2020.

You Can Buy Kurt Cobain’s Pack Of Cigarettes For $1,750

When you consider the legacy that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana left behind, it’s not all too surprising that the pack of mentholated American Spirits is presently being auctioned off. Described as the most expensive pack of cigarettes ever, the current bid for Cobain’s cancer sticks stands at $1,750. The cigarettes were saved by the Nirvana front man’s rehab roommate after being left behind when he left the facility, shortly before his tragic and untimely death.

But it’s not just Kurt Cobain’s cigarettes that are being auctioned off by Julien’s Auctions, and there is plenty more where that came from. In addition to the American Spirits, Cobain’s stage-played Fender Skystang is not only being offered for a starting price of $250,000, but after only two bids the price is currently set at $700,000. Current estimates suggest that the guitar in question will sell for up to $2 million when all is said and done.

You Can Own Kurt Cobain’s Clothes

Among the Kurt Cobain memorabilia, some of his wardrobe is also up for sale, including the jeans he wore while filming the music video for “Heart-Shaped Box,” as well as a yellow and orange argyle cardigan, estimated at $20,000 and $8,000 respectively. There are also signed promotional posters, handwritten journal pages, portable amplifiers, and smashed guitars that are all on the auction block.

Kurt Cobain’s Legacy

Even 30 years after his suicide, there is no denying how relevant Kurt Cobain, his band, and his legacy remain to this day. Though we’d argue that a pack of his cigarettes seems like an odd piece to want to add to your collection, it’s not so strange after all when you consider how much Cobain’s music, lyrics, and art resonated with Nirvana fans across multiple generations. Known to be an avid smoker, there’s no telling how many lyrics he wrote while lighting up an American Spirit and hunching over one of his many Mead notebooks.
