Celine Dion Sickness Getting Worse According To Sister

By Robert Scucci | Published

Celine Dion’s health has continued to decline over the past year, and her ability to walk and sing in the future has yet to be determined. Afflicted with the extremely rare Moersch-Woltman syndrome (more commonly known as “stiff-person” syndrome), the Queen of Power Ballads may never return to perform on stage again.

According to her sister, she doesn’t have control over her muscles. Stiff-person syndrome affects one in a million people, and can be exacerbated by noise, touch, and emotional distress.

Celine Dion’s Sister Offers A Health Update

Though Celine Dion’s sister, Claudette, holds out hope that she’ll one day be able to perform on stage again, her primary focus is treatment and recovery at the present time. This update may be disappointing to fans who were hoping to see Dion reschedule the remaining dates of her Courage world tour, but canceling it outright is the right move to make. Not only could a loud concert setting lock up the singer’s vocal cords, it’s likely that her heart would not be able to handle being pushed so hard.

Stiff Person Syndrome Also Affects Her Voice

Most well known for her 1997 chart-dominating power-ballad, “My Heart Will Go On,” Celine Dion had the ability to beautifully belt her powerful voice across a three-octave range. These days, her condition has not only adversely affected her ability to hit the high notes, but has also limited her mobility. While there are treatments to alleviate symptoms of the disorder, it’s causes are not fully understood, and there is currently no known cure.

Canceling The Courage Tour

Celine Dion’s Courage world tour kicked off on September 18, 2019, and was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic just a year later. When she opened up about her diagnosis in December 2022, the original plan was to reschedule the remaining tour dates. But as her health continued to decline, she was forced to cancel the rest of her tour indefinitely in May 2023.

Is Celine Dion’s Condition Treatable?

There are suitable treatments to help alleviate the symptoms Celine Dion is currently experiencing. The stiffness associated with her condition can be reduced substantially through an intravenous immunoglobulin treatment that provides natural antibodies to her immune system. A strict regimen of muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety medications could also be used to alleviate some of the more debilitating symptoms. The unfortunate reality that we have to face is that Celine Dion may never perform again if her condition continues to deteriorate. But the singer is in good spirits despite her illness, and was most recently seen this past October in Las Vegas. This rare public appearance took place at the T-Mobile Arena where she warmly greeted her hometown hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, after competing against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Celine Dion’s Legacy

To date, Celine Dion has sold over 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. Her most recent album, 2019’s Courage, only further cemented her legacy as a pop icon, marking her first album to hit the number-one spot on the US Billboard 200 charts in 17 years. We all hope that Celine Dion gets the help she needs, and that she’ll one day be able to perform again. But in the meantime, focusing on her health is her number one priority. Source: CBS News
