The Book Of Boba Fett
The Book of Boba Fett is a 2021-22 spin-off of The Mandalorian that, for all intents and purposes, is a one-off mini-series. The series is set in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian as characters have crossed over from both. While the series was intended to be a one-season run only, recently there have been hints that this may no longer be true.
When Disney announced The Book of Boba Fett, they did it in a sly, if not confusing way. It came at the end of the second-season finale for The Mandalorian as a surprise end-credit scene in a reveal that said The Book of Boba Fett would be arriving in December 2021. This sparked some confusion.
The Book Of Boba Fett Is A Spin-Off Of The Mandalorian
Many first felt that the announcement meant that The Book of Boba Fett was the subtitle for season 3 of The Mandalorian and that season 3’s focus would lean more toward Boba Fett than it would Din Djarin. This forced Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, to come out and clarify by saying that The Book of Boba Fett was indeed its own series and not part of The Mandalorian’s season 3.
The Book of Boba Fett, for the most part, told the story of one of Star Wars’ most mysterious, but popular characters. In the original Star Wars trilogy, Fett appears in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) where he meets his untimely end after falling into a Sarlacc pit. But in his brief appearances, Fett became the one character that fans gravitated to and wanted to see more of.
Fans finally got what they have long hoped for when Jon Favreau, on the heels of The Mandalorian’s popularity, came up with an idea to bring back the popular bounty hunter. Here, he brings back Fett from near death in the Sarlacc pit to team up with Fennec Shand as they try to make a big name for themselves by taking over territory that once belonged to and was controlled by Jabba the Hut.
The Cast Is Led By Temuera Morrison
Jon Favreau found his Boba Fett with Star Wars vet, Temuera Morrison. Morrison began his Star Wars career playing Jengo Fett, Boba’s father, in the 2002 film, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. He followed that up by playing a number of clones in 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Joining Morrison’s Boba Fett is Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. Never backing down from a fight, Shand offers her services as an elite mercenary and assassin. They are definitely partners in crime.
Of course, we can’t talk about Boba Fett without mentioning from where he came – The Mandalorian. Pedro Pascal appears (to some, too much) as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian to offer his assistance as well.
Some of the recurring stars include Matt Berry as the voice of 8D8, Jennifer Beals as Garsa Fwip, Carey Jones as Krrsantan the Wookie Bounty Hunter, and Sophie Thatcher as Drash. Of course, you can’t have a Star Wars series and not have a few surprise guests.
It is way too early to tell what impact, if any, The Book of Boba Fett will have within the Star Wars franchise. The series, when first announced, was a highly anticipated one, especially with how popular and well-made The Mandalorian was. As a spin-off from that series, expectations were high.
Unfortunately, what fans got instead was hit-or-miss seven episodes that seemed to be unsure if it wanted to tell Boba Fett’s story, or Din Djarin’s. Many complaints, if you will, of the series centered around there being way too much of The Mandalorian’s involvement, including Grogu and even Luke Skywalker. Strange to think that Luke Skywalker’s involvement in any Star Wars projects would be unwanted or unnecessary.
When The Book of Boba Fett was announced, it was considered to be a one-off. Seven episodes and the series would conclude. Now, though, there are big hints that a second season is coming, and if true, perhaps Favreau and crew look to right the wrongs of the first season and finally give Boba Fett his proper due.
The first order of business would be to leave Din Djarin out of it and let Boba Fett do Boba Fett things. Then, perhaps, we can get a good feel for where The Book of Boba Fett stands within the Star Wars franchise. For a minor character who has always been held in such high regard, he at least deserves that.
