Doctor Who Season Finale Prequel Tells The Story Of Clarence And The Whispermen

If you recall, the recent Doctor Who season finale, “The Name of the Doctor” opened up with a rather sudden and strange scene. In 1893, the reptilian detective Madame Vastra is called to the cell of a murderer named Clarence DeMarco. In exchange for a pardon, he offers to reveal important information about the Doctor, as well as a message: “It is a secret he will take to the grave, and it is discovered.” That information kicked off the storyline that would take the Doctor to the planet Trenzalore, and literally to his own grave.
Now the BBC has released the “prequel” above, which reveals just how Clarence came across that important information. Unsurprisingly, he was just a pawn, recruited by the Great Intelligence’s Whispermen with the promise that he would be released and would live a long life…he just wouldn’t ever sleep well again. It’s a creepy clip that clarifies — or should that be Clara-fies? — one of the episode’s unanswered questions, and it’s fun to see the unnerving Whispermen get a little more screentime.
“Clarence and the Whispermen” is actually the second “Name of the Doctor” prequel we’ve seen. The BBC also released “She Said, He Said” earlier this month. You can check it out below.
