Starfleet Logo Appears In The Sky As London Goes Into Darkness

Drones are almost definitely going to become some of the most dangerous weapons of the future, in terms of both information gathering and more violent activities. But for now, we’ll have to only worry about their eventual takeover of advertising campaigns. Even during an event for global warming awareness. Take it away, Paramount Pictures.
Doing its part to draw pop culture-guided attention to the growing event that is the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, which occurred this past Saturday night, Paramount Pictures hired the skills of the Austrian company Ars Electronica Futurelab & Ascending Technologies to create a massive display depicting the Starfleet logo in the middle of the London sky. The team used an array of 30 quadrocopter drones equipped with LED lights that flew into the air and formed the rotating symbol for a large crowd as the lights powered down on major landmarks all across London, such as the famed bridge, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace. Watch the video below and decide whether you’d rather give the WWF your money on May 15th and 17th when Star Trek Into Darkness releases into IMAX theaters and normal theaters, respectively. It’s the planet, dudes.
The highest drone hovered above ground at around 426 ft, while the lowest was around 118 ft in the air, stretching the logo to a height of around 308 ft. It isn’t too hard to imagine what this will look like as a McDonald’s arch.
“We are very pleased to go ‘into darkness’ with the rest of the world in support of Earth Hour,” said Paramount’s Director of Marketing, Jon Fletcher. “It seems fitting to be associated with such a global cause.”
London is one of the cities that Into Darkness villain John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) attacks, so there’s no question why they’re showing support, but a better show of planetary support would be to use Douglas Adams’ words of wisdom: “Don’t panic.” Of course, that series starts off with Earth exploding, so maybe Starfleet better serves the purpose.
