There are some sweet perks to being the child of the biggest movie star in the free world. Not only did Jaden Smith get to star with Jackie Chan in The Karate Kid remake, he got to meet the President of the United States, and ask proceeded to ask him about aliens. Jaden’s father Will does make a sizeable amount of his living fighting aliens, so one can only assume that the existence of extraterrestrials is a pressing concern among the children in the Smith household.
While promoting Men In Black 3, which hits US theaters May 25, the elder Smith related the incident to a BBC interviewer. Before a private tour of the White House with the entire Obama clan, Jaden, apparently quite the burgeoning conspiracy theorist, asked if he could pose his question to the Commander in Chief.
His father said:
Jaden had said to me, ‘Dad, I gotta ask the president about the aliens,’ and I was like, ‘Dude, no, no, it’s not cool. No, it’s not cool, it’s embarrassing. … Do not ask the president!’
The next day, in the Situation room, the 13-year-old got a mischievous glint in his eye.
So we get into the Situation Room and Jaden gets the look in his eyes and he leans over and he says, ‘Dad, what’s my punishment?’ … And Barack is starting to talk about this Situation Room and Jaden says, ‘Excuse me, Mr. President?’
Barack said, ‘Don’t tell me.’ And in perfect form—like this is why he is the president—he stopped and looked at Jaden and said, ‘The aliens, right? … OK, I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of extraterrestrials but I can tell you if there had been a top secret meeting and if there would have had to have been a discussion about it, it would have taken place in this room.’
The Smith boys are going to co-star in M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming sci-fi adventure After Earth, about a father-son team of astronauts, so maybe Jaden will get to interact with some aliens of his own.
