Zendaya is one of the most popular stars in the world, on a level almost unthinkable to most people in the world. She is involved in some of the biggest film franchises in the world, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Dune series of films, and is the lead actress in one of HBO’s most popular and acclaimed shows ever. She was recently listed in Time Magazine’s Annual 100 Most Influential People, alongside United States President Joe Biden, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Oprah Winfrey. With all that said, here is Zendaya singing Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” for Kidz Bop.

That very…interesting and definitely very enthusiastic song was released in 2009 on Kidz Bop 15, one of the many compilation albums featuring child singers covering the biggest pop hits of the day. That same album featured a cover of Rihanna’s “Disturbia” and “When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls, so it is fair to say that Zendaya got off easy on this one. Still, one cannot deny that the Spider-Man star is not giving her all in that very brightly colored and frantically edited music video.

Interestingly, Zendaya herself actually responded to a fan posting the video back in 2014, revealing that while that is indeed her in the video, she was lip-syncing over someone else’s voice. It seems that the Dune star is a little bit embarrassed about the “Hot N Cold” video, which should make all of us feel grateful that our childhoods are not necessarily out in the world in the same way.

While Zendaya is known first and foremost as an actress, she does also have a parallel career as a pop singer. She released her first and to date, only solo album in 2013 and has also released an EP and a number of singles, several of which were duets with her co-stars Bella Thorne and Zac Efron. While Kidz Bop might not be the work she is most proud of, it is actually pretty nice that Zendaya at least does not try to hide from the world forever.

Zendaya first became prominent in the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up, co-starring with Bella Thorne for three seasons. She followed that with a lead role on another Disney Channel show, K.C. Undercover, which also lasted for three seasons. As with many Disney stars, this was the time period in which she began to branch out into different entertainment fields but has gained the most success in her dramatic roles.

Zendaya will reprise the role of the Fremen warrior Chani in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Chapter Two, along with a returning Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, and Javier Bardem. The second film in the series is getting an infusion of new stars, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. It is safe to say that Dune: Chapter Two will likely have better production values than Zendaya’s Kidz Bop video.
