HBO has released the official trailer for the White House Plumbers. The upcoming limited series stars Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux as a pair of burglars who get involved in one of the biggest political scandals in American history.

“We’ll be laughed at as third-rate burglars forever. People need to understand why we did what we did.” Harrelson says in the clip

The series is based on public records and the 2007 book Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons from the White House by Egil and Matthew Krogh. Created for television by Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, White House Plumbers follows E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) as they try to protect President Richard Nixon, while unintentionally bringing his presidency crashing down.

The trailer also shows Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and Liddy (Justin Theroux) being recruited as covert operatives to plant surveillance inside the Watergate. “You are White House employees on the payroll. Don’t get caught,” they are told by Bud Krogh (Rich Sommer).

Hunt’s lingering chuckle response sets the tone for the clip, which describes their task as “sabotage, espionage, infiltration, and bare-knuckle tactics.”

Joining Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux in the cast are Domhnall Gleeson as John Dean, Lena Headey as Dorothy Hunt, and Kiernan Shipka as Kevan Hunt. Ike Barinholtz stars as Jeb Magruder alongside Yul Vazquez as Bernard “Macho” Barker, David Krumholtz as William O. Bittman, Rich Sommer as Egil “Bud” Krogh, Kim Coates as Frank Sturgis, and Liam James as Saint John Hunt.

Away from the Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux series, the White House Plumbers were a covert team of former FBI and CIA operatives. The group was established after the publication of the Pentagon Papers in 1971. They were tasked with stopping leaks of classified information or anything that would depict President Nixon in an unfavorable light.

The work of the unit faded away following the botched Ellsberg break-in. But some of its former operatives branched into illegal activities while still employed at the White House, along with managers of the Committee to Re-elect the President. Their tasks included the Watergate break-in and the ensuing scandal. Over the years, the group has been described as Nixon’s fixers. The HBO series will focus on the main players, portrayed by Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux.

The White House Plumbers are the latest HBO projects for the actors. Woody Harrelson previously appeared in True Detective, while Justin Theroux starred in The Leftovers.
