After over a decade, Tron 3 will finally be appearing in a cinema near you with Morbius star Jared Leto set to lead. According to Variety, all systems are officially a go in what will be a picture potentially directed by Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), who is currently in talks to helm the film. With the working title of Tron: Ares, the movie will be a welcome breath of fresh air for the Disney franchise that stalled out over recent years.

Tron 3 will act as a followup to the original 1982 feature Tron and its 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy with Jared Leto taking the place of previous stars Jeff Bridges and Garret Hedlund. Legacy also featured Olivia Wilde in a leading role and was directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) in what would be the action-leaning filmmaker’s directorial debut. As of right now, no plot details surrounding Tron: Ares have been revealed, but we can expect more vibrantly colorful adventures on the way.

Those who have been following the creation of Tron 3 since its early days, they’ll know that Jared Leto has long had his name attached to the project. Whispers began circulating back in 2017 that the House of Gucci star would appear in the film as well as add his name as a producer. Back then, Lion director Garth Davis had agreed to direct the feature, but would later step down.

Helping to bring the third film in the franchise to life will be Jesse Wigutow who serves as the project’s screenwriter with Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook joining as producers. While Tron 3 has found its leading man in Jared Leto, a further cast lineup has yet to be released at this time. Tron: Legacy brought Jeff Bridges back to reprise his role from the original film, so it’s more than likely that we’ll see some familiar faces returning to the third installment of the sci-fi epic.

The original story followed Kevin Flynn (Bridges) a computer guru and video game designer who finds himself zapped into a world existing inside of a computer. In Tron: Legacy, almost 30 years have passed since Kevin Flynn disappeared with his now adult son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) searching for him inside “the Grid” where he comes face-to-face with evil forces hoping to wreak havoc on the world outside of their own. With plot details for Tron 3 being kept under wraps, at this time it’s unclear whether Jared Leto will be playing another member of the Flynn family or if a new story will begin.

After appearing in recent titles including House of Gucci, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and The Little Things, the Academy Award-winning actor will not only be appearing in one Disney-backed movie but another as well. Outside of Tron 3, Jared Leto will also be seen in Disney’s adventure comedy horror reboot, Haunted Mansion where he’ll star alongside Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Levy. As of right now, no release date for Tron 3 has been announced, but you can catch Jared Leto in Haunted Mansion when it begins to haunt theaters on August 11, 2023.
