According to Collider, Tom Cruise is already thinking about his next project, an R-Rated movie that’s so violent it’s been dubbed “The Gnarly Movie” by fans online.

Last year, Tom Cruise decided to take it upon himself to save the movie industry and bring people back to the theaters with Top Gun: Maverick. After that, the 61-year-old actor returned to another tried and true franchise and has been hard at work making the next set of Mission Impossible movies, Dead Reckoning Parts One and Two.

The pair are getting ready to tackle a hard-edged movie where Cruise will be playing a “very un-Tom character,” according to McQuarrie.

Tom Cruise, often recognized for his adrenaline-pumping action roles in high-budget blockbusters, has also proven his mettle as a versatile actor with standout performances in films like Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire.

While he has been predominantly focused on big-budget sequels in the last few years, there is a collaboration in the works with director Christopher McQuarrie (director of the Mission Impossible movies) to do something very different. The pair are getting ready to tackle a hard-edged movie where Cruise will be playing a “very un-Tom character,” according to McQuarrie.

McQuarrie, also known for his work on films like Collateral and Jack Reacher, has affirmed that Tom Cruise’s interest in franchise fare was partly driven by concerns about declining box office numbers. The duo wanted to ensure they could still pull off event movies that resonated with audiences and encouraged people to leave the comfort of their homes to watch a movie in the cinemas.

Cruise and McQuarrie have been secretly developing a project that, though still shrouded in secrets, promises to depart Cruise from the typical characters he plays.

Their experiment worked as Top Gun: Maverick was the biggest movie of 2022, bringing in $718 million, garnering six Academy Award nominations, and winning one.

However, it seems the time is ripe for Tom Cruise to venture into grittier territories, away from the safety of big budgets and familiar franchises. Amidst filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, Cruise and McQuarrie have been secretly developing a project that, though still shrouded in secrets, promises to depart Cruise from the typical characters he plays.

The new project will reportedly allow the actor to explore grittier, darker, and more violent territory, complete with new complexities and dimension not usually shown in the big tentpoles Cruise typically features.

In the past, McQuarrie expressed regret over the way Jack Reacher was handled, acknowledging that it could have been an R-rated franchise exploring the grit and violence present in the original novels. In a way, this “Gnarly Movie” is his second chance, and McQuarrie intends to push the boundaries and challenge Tom Cruise’s acting abilities in ways previously unseen.

Exactly what this grittier version of Tom Cruise will look like is still unknown. No details of “The Gnarly Movie” have been released, other than that Cruise and McQuarrie have written a script, suggesting that the project is indeed happening and is well underway. However, until the current actors’ and writers’ strikes are resolved, it is unlikely that fans will receive any new information about the project.

Additionally, before delving into this new endeavor, Tom Cruise and McQuarrie must first complete Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which is certainly turning out to be an impossible mission considering that the deadline is 11 months from now, the film is only 40 percent finished, and production currently cannot continue.
