The Jinx Part Two Continues Landmark True Crime Series With New Revelations

The Jinx is back. If you know, you know. Released in 2015, The Jinx broke new ground when it came to true crime documentaries and the documentary genre as a whole. Many people always bring up Making a Murderer, but The Jinx actually came first and nine years later, it is back with The Jinx Part Two.

The Jinx Part Two, out April 21, picks up right where things left off almost a decade ago, with that now infamous hot mic moment where Robert Durst is heard saying, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

Less than 24 hours before that hot mic episode aired, Durst, a New York real estate heir, was arrested on first-degree murder charges for the death of his best friend, Susan Berman. Durst was convicted in September 2021 and later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In January 2022, the 78-year-old died of natural causes in a hospital outside the California prison where he was serving his sentence.

The trailer for The Jinx Part Two came out this week. In it, we see and hear Durst during prison phone calls. Writer and director Andrew Jarecki also says he has come across an audio recording that has “changed my perception of something I’ve been working on for 17 years.”

In The Jinx Part Two, the filmmakers continue their investigation, uncovering hidden material, Durst’s prison calls, and interviews with witnesses who had not come forward previously.

Jarecki also directed the film All Good Things (2010), starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, which was inspired by Durst’s life. After initially not cooperating with journalists, Durst professed admiration for All Good Things and agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki, which led to The Jinx.

In The Jinx Part Two, the filmmakers continue their investigation, uncovering hidden material, Durst’s prison calls, and interviews with witnesses who had not come forward previously. An unidentified woman is heard beginning to share her story, but keeps asking whether the conversation is confidential. Durst can be heard saying that there are going to be “surprises and surprises.”

Susan Berman is just one death that Durst’s name has been tangled up in. In 1982, Durst’s wife Kathie disappeared, and her body has never been found. Durst denied killing her and was never charged with a crime connected to her disappearance. Durst’s best friend, Susan Berman, was shot and killed just as the district attorney was getting ready to talk to her about Kathie’s case.

The Jinx received critical and audience acclaim; it has a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Then, in 2001, Durst was arrested shortly after body parts belonging to his elderly neighbor, Morris Black, were found floating in Galveston Bay. Durst hired powerhouse defense attorney Dick DeGuerin who said Durst shot Black but did so in self-defense. The jury agreed and acquitted Durst. He ended up serving three years on evidence tampering – for the dismemberment of Black’s body.

The Jinx received critical and audience acclaim; it has a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It won two Primetime Emmys and led the way for other true crime documentaries. Esquire called the series’ ending “one of the most jaw-dropping moments in television history,” so it’s no wonder why The Jinx Part Two is highly anticipated.

The Jinx Part Two premieres on April 21, and all six episodes will be available to stream on Max.
