Taika Waititi What We Do in the Shadows

Taika Waititi is easily one of the best directors that have been attached to Marvel and many other projects for that matter. His most recent endeavor is that of playing Blackbeard the Pirate on the HBO show, Our Flags Means Death. On top of that, fans are patiently or more so impatiently waiting for Thor: Love and Thunder to release. With the sheer amount of praise the director received for Thor: Ragnarok, it makes total sense that fans are clamoring for more from Mr. Waititi. During a recent interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the host asked about what it took for Taika to land his way onto a Marvel set. Summed up in his normal and his clever responses, he replied, “You’ve got to lie.”

Lying on one’s resume is certainly not a secret among the job-seeking community. While some jobs might be right outside our reach, a common thing is to pad your resume in order to make sure that you are given a fair shot at said job. We aren’t condoning lying, but sometimes it’s necessary. The full Taika Waititi comment is as follows, “Say yes. Say yes to everything,” he added, “Just nod, ‘Yes, absolutely I can do that. I won’t let you down.’ It’s like getting any job. If you want a job, you’ve got to lie. You’ve got to fake it.” While his comments might be taken with a grain of salt, as his normal interviews are chock full of dry humor and sarcasm, he seems to be right on the money about this one. The star of Better Things, Pamela Aldon, was also on the talk show with Waititi and confirmed his summation of how to get a job. She claimed that Mel Brooks had a similar philosophy in getting his movies made. According to Aldon, Mel would say, “You’re just saying yes and then you get to the point where you’re making it, and it all works out.” You can’t go wrong with words paraphrased from the legendary Mel Brooks.

Regardless of the advice set forth by Taika Waititi, he was given the reigns to two Marvel films. Of course, they are both concerning Thor, but his direction and art style was enough for Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) to give Waititi back-to-back films. So far, the cast for the film includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Karen Gillan, and Tessa Thompson. With rumored appearances by Matt Damon, Sam Neill, Melissa McCarthy, and Russell Crowe. That is certainly a ton of star power to have to deal with on this highly anticipated sequel. The director has also claimed that this is “the craziest film I’ve ever done.” We certainly hope so.

Had Taika Waititi not lied and said yes to everything that was asked of him, Thor: Ragnarok could have been a much different film in the grand scheme of things. However, it all worked out in the end and the film became one of the most beloved in the entirety of the MCU. Now we all get to see what madness Waititi has cooked up for the sequel. Thor: Love & Thunder drops on July 8th. With all the speculation surrounding the multiverse, this film could go completely off the rails in terms of the characters shown. Even more so than the ones listed above. We honestly cannot wait to see this film.
