Stephen King It Series Welcome To Derry Not Getting Released?

Sad news, Stephen King fans—according to Variety, HBO and Max chairman/CEO Casey Bloy reports that the much-anticipated prequel to the horror maestro’s It, titled Welcome to Derry, faces significant delays. Look out for the show in 2025 instead of the initially scheduled Halloween (go figure) 2024 release.

Welcome to Derry also shares the hardship of a delay with a popular series on the network, The White Lotus. HBO/Max similarly delayed the third season of Lotus till 2025.

What’s behind the postponements?

The It Prequel Has Been Delayed To 2025

As some might easily guess, the delay in both the Stephen King inspired project and The White Lotus stems from the recently concluded writers’ strike and ongoing actors’ strike—specifically, how both impact the entire 2024 programming slate for HBO and Max. Revised scheduling plans—“revised” serving as a euphemism for “heavily postponed”—result from massive shutdowns in production.

Such shutdowns manifest far-reaching effects, like work stoppage for crews and casts directly involved in the show, as well as disappointment for eager audiences anticipating the release of delayed projects.

The White Lotus Season 3 Is Similarly Delayed

An Emmy-nominated, celebrated anthology series from creator Mike White, The White Lotus initially experienced a production halt for Season 3 instead of the writers’ strike. Similarly, Stephen King’s Welcome to Derry ceased production in July 2023 amidst the actors’ strike.

The latter show serves as an expansion of the universe imagined by King. It is further explored by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in It and It Chapter Two, which began production in early 2023.

The delay notwithstanding, the cast and creative team responsible for Welcome to Derry assured an exciting and intriguing project. Cast-wise, the ensemble includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar, while behind the camera, Muschietti, Barbera Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs spearheaded the project.

Both Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane function as co-showrunners and executive producers. What’s more, fans of the movies were delighted that Andy Muschietti signed to multiple direct episodes, lending his directing chops and the same chilling vision to the small screen fans relished in theatres.

The Prequel Series Will Explore The It Universe Further

Welcome to Derry seeks to explore the lore of Stephen King’s It universe further—a prospect thrilling many fans of the original novel and subsequent films. That said, the project’s storyline remains tightly under wraps, veiled in a secrecy that only generates more excitement. Given this hype, the delay in the show’s release will undoubtedly disappoint fans.

It Remains One Of Stephen King’s Most Famous Works

First published in 1986, It (the novel) relates the tale of a group of children in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, who face off against an ancient, shape-shifting evil praying on the town’s children. Frequently and iconically, the entity manifests as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Interestingly, the novel divides itself between two time periods: the late 1950s, when the characters are children, and the mid-1980s, when they have grown up.

The novel explores powerful themes: childhood trauma, the impact of memory, and the ironclad bonds of friendship. It also meditates on the darker aspects of childhood, from sadistic bullying to domestic abuse, to the loss of innocence and enduring grief.

Stephen King’s novel and the related films blend horror with a genuine coming-of-age narrative, achieving a rich, layered tale that ultimately embodies one of his most iconic works. Let’s hope production on Welcome to Derry doesn’t stall for too long.
