South Park is no stranger to relevant topics and controversy The COVID-19 pandemic and all the discussion surrounding it is certainly no exception. Earlier in the pandemic, their Pandemic Special and South ParQ Vaccination Special episodes on HBO Max skewered and commented on people’s current reactions to the lockdowns, the pandemic, and the vaccines. Their follow-up on Paramount+, South Park: Post Covid, showed the South Park boys all grown up and how their world is doing post-pandemic. Now, their second post-pandemic special is ready to stream on December 16, and it looks like time travel will be playing a big role.

In the trailer, Kyle, Cartman, and Stan are still all grown-up and looking into the death of Kenny (a long-running joke on the show, so not the biggest spoiler.) If the teaser trailer is anything to go by, it looks like time travel will be the key to solving the mystery. In fact, according to the Paramount+ description, it looks like they’ll be using time travel to prevent the pandemic from happening at all. Check out the trailer for South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid below:

South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid marks the second television movie from co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s deal with ViacomCBS. Back in August, the two showrunners signed a deal to create 14 original movies for the Paramount+ platform. This means until 2027 they’ll be creating two new movies per year for ViacomCBS. This deal also renewed the series for new seasons on Comedy Central until 2027. This major deal will put South Park at 30 seasons total. As it’s already the second longest-running animated show of all time, beat only by The Simpsons, this will surely help firmly cement its legendary status.

Strangely, if you’re a loyal South Park viewer, you might have to spread out your streaming service subscriptions. Since HBO Max licensed the entire library of the show’s many seasons, that’s where you have to go to watch the old episodes. It’s also where you can find Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s first full-length feature, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

The ViacomCBS deal, which was estimated to be a deal worth about $900 million, allows them to get some of their own exclusive South Park content on their Paramount+ platform that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. So, you’ll need a Paramount+ subscription and an HBO Max subscription if you want to access all of the content Matt Parker and Trey Stone have produced in their South Park universe.

Regardless, if you’re a fan of South Park and their willingness to always comment on the hot-button topic of the day, you’ll have plenty more to enjoy in the near future. The new season is set to air in 2022, several of the pandemic specials have already been released on their various platforms, and you can stream the newest special later this month only on Paramount+. It’s a good time to be a South Park fan!
