Well these are some interesting deep dives.

She-hulk

Marvel premiered a new She-Hulk: Attorney at Law TV spot this week, and among other things we get to see four Marvel villains who had yet to be adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we see them alongside Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky we think you’ll agree they don’t really rank in the Abomination’s weight class. You can judge for yourself in the spot below. The bad guys in question show up at around the 7-second mark.

As you can see in the spot, it isn’t clear whether or not She-Hulk will actually be fighting these super-villains or… sharing her feelings with them? The four characters show up in a scene that appears to be some kind of self-help or group therapy session led by Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky. Behind the Hulk villain you can see a placard with his picture on it, above which is the quote “Seize your true power.” We don’t know who is playing who yet, but to invested Marvel Comics fans at least a couple of the other bad guys should be easy to name. The shots from the new scene confirm the appearances of El Aguila, The Porcupine, Man-Bull, and Saracen. You can check out a group shot below, followed by individual shots.

While you may be thinking Marvel is scraping the bottom of the barrel here by bringing in these D-list, or Z-list, or–does the alphabet have negatives? Well, whatever list these bad guys are from, it’s par for the course when it comes to She-Hulk stories. A number of volumes of her comics have been packed with the more ridiculous and obscure Marvel heroes and villains to add to the humorous flavor. Theories that a character seen in the first trailer was Frog-Man goes along with the theme.

Speaking of Frog-Man, assuming that was him in the first She-Hulk trailer, he and at least a couple of the villains in this new spot could have something to do with Charlie Cox‘s appearance in the series as Daredevil. At least a couple of the spot’s bad guys — El Aguila and Man-Bull — are largely associated with Daredevil in the comics, as is Frog-Man. In fact, most of the villains are associated with protagonists from Marvel’s Netflix heroes; Daredevil shares El Aguila with Power Man (aka Luke Cage) & Iron Fist and Saracen is a Punisher villain.

The outlier is Porcupine, and his appearance confirms a rumor that surfaced in May of the supervillain’s involvement in She-Hulk. Introduced way back in the sixties as an Ant-Man and Wasp bad guy, the original Porcupine died fighting the Serpent Society in 1986’s Captain America #315. A later version actually became a good guy for a while.

The spot does raise the question of exactly what we’re looking at. In other spots and trailers for She-Hulk we’ve seen Emil Blonsky imprisoned with hints that the titular hero would act as his lawyer. Since he’s free in the spot, does the scene take place after Shulkie gets him off the hook, or is it possible Blonsky escaped since the events of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, and the group therapy scene happens before She-Hulk recaptures him? It’s possible we’ll get to learn when She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on Thursday, August 18.
