Evil Dead fans are getting their first look at the highly-anticipated Evil Dead Rise in the form of a tweet from director Lee Cronin. The tweet shows a photo from the set of a hallway bathed in carnage. The very first Evil Dead movie was made under the advice to “let the blood run down the screen,” and this sneak peek shows us that the fifth installment will carry on that tradition.

However, Evil Dead Rise promises to be something different from the misadventures in the cabin in the woods. The Necronomicon goes urban, as the action takes place in a high-rise apartment building, following two sisters, a drifter, and a single mom. When a mysterious tome is discovered in the basement of the building, all Hell literally breaks loose.

Fans of the Evil Dead franchise know that this means demonic Deadites will be wreaking havoc all over the building, and early screenings of the new movie were so positive that they promoted distributors to reconsider a theatrical release rather than a streaming drop on HBO Max. Evil Dead Rise will come out in theaters on April 21, 2023.

Evil Dead Rise was produced by some names that should be familiar to fans of the other movies, such as Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell. It stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, and Mia Challis, and takes the action from the remote Tennessee cabin to the heart of Los Angeles. Its director, Lee Cronin, also wrote the script and was hand-picked by franchise creator Sam Raimi for the job.

The production for Evil Dead Rise might have suffered from its own Necronomicon curses. Filmed in New Zealand, it was interrupted by Covid 19 lockdowns and other hardships. However, it comes from a popular franchise that includes four movies, a television series, and several video games, including a recent release that has received positive reviews.

The 2013 reboot, The Evil Dead, also prepared audiences for a movie without Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams, the hero of the first three movies and the Starz series. Campbell stepped down from actively portraying the role after the show was canceled, but has since been open to lending his distinctive voice to an animated version of the character. Although he helped produce Evil Dead Rise, he will not be starring in it, passing the torch to other Deadite-fighters.

However, even he promises a wild ride in Evil Dead Rise. “It’s going to creep your sh*t out,” he said in an interview, and from the horror veteran, this is high praise that shows Campbell’s confidence in the movie even without his prominent character. He predicted the theatrical release back in July after the test audiences provided their encouragement.

With a release date of April 21, 2023, fans will have to wait to see more of what Evil Dead Rise has in store. Early hints from the set look encouraging that this is going to be one of the scariest entries into the Evil Dead universe, especially as we have to look to new heroes aside from “El Jefe” to save the world. Will Beth and Ellie, the heroines of the new movie, be up to the task?
