Sean Penn has been in the middle of the event that has left the world reeling. Vladamir Putin and Russia decided to attempt to take over the country of Ukraine on February 24th. The news coverage of this event has been nonstop as a result of the world watching as tension has grown higher and higher. Mr. Penn has allegedly been in Ukraine and speaking with the president of the country, Volodymyr Zelensky. Now with the upcoming Oscars taking place today, he gave the Academy an ultimatum. If Volodymyr Zelensky is not invited to the Oscars and is able to speak to the world, he will smelt his Oscars in public. It’s an odd threat to be made by a prolific actor.

Not only is Sean Penn threatening to smelt his Oscars in public, but he is claiming that everyone should be boycotting the ceremony altogether. According to the actor, “I understand that, to celebrate their films, it is so much more importantly their moment to shine, and to protest and to boycott that Academy Awards. I myself, if it comes back to it, when I return, I will smelt mine in public.” Apparently, he believes that those who have a bigger stage and voice should be checking in with the higher officials of Ukraine. He added, “I pray there have not been arrogant people who consider themselves representatives of the greater good who have decided not to check in with leadership in Ukraine. So I’m going to hope that’s not what happened, and I hope everyone walks out if it is.”

These are certainly strong words from the two-time Oscar-winning actor. Sean Penn has won Best Actor for his roles in Milk and Mystic River. Though winning the Best Actor award is a high honor, Penn believes that what he is doing in favor of Ukraine holds a much higher purpose. He is also shooting a documentary for the channel Vice, which is all about the Ukrainian/Russian conflict. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has also posted a video on his Instagram of the two of them together. Currently, because of the danger in the country, Penn is currently residing in Warsaw to protect his safety. It seems as if the actor is dead set on helping end this conflict.

Sean Penn is asking that Volodymyr Zelensky can be able to call the Oscars or possibly make a video that can be played during the ceremony because there are so many people watching it every year. He claims that if we know more about what is happening in Ukraine, then that will stop the conflict sooner. With the threat of nuclear war being spoken about so often these days, that might not be a bad idea. However, smelting your Oscars in public might not matter much. It’s still an odd threat that might not hold a ton of water for the rest of the world.

Sean Penn is set to appear in the Starz series, Gaslit, which follows the infamous Watergate scandal that brought forth the resignation of former president Richard Nixon. He plays John Mitchell, who was Nixon’s closest advisor during the time in which the scandal took place. He has gone full-on method actor in the film while looking almost unrecognizable as the older and larger Mitchell. He remains a busy actor, but it seems as if his chief concern is helping stop the invasion of Ukraine by any means necessary. There is no telling when his documentary on Vice will be released, but smelting his Oscars is something that the man is prepared to do to help the cause of preventing further war.
