Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Round-Up: Peter Davison, John Barrowman, And Freema Agyeman Sound Off

We can’t go a week without hearing new rumors about who will, or won’t, be returning for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebrations. There have been rumors that all the surviving Doctors will return, or none of them, or maybe some of them. The same goes for the various surviving companions. Honestly, at this point we’ve decided to just bundle all the latest rumors together for your reading convenience.
First up is actor Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor from 1981 – 1984. While a guest at last month’s MystiCon convention, Davison said that he didn’t know anything official about the chances of his return, but he didn’t sound optimistic. “I don’t think it will involve the older Doctors, certainly in their present form, because of course we’re meant to look exactly as we did when we left the TARDIS and none of us really do.” The aging is certainly an issue, but this is Doctor Who we’re talking about; it wouldn’t be difficult to come up with some timey-wimey technobabble explanation for why the older Doctors look, well, older.
Davison did say that he had an upcoming meeting with the head of BBC Wales. Could that be a ray of hope? Davison says, “I don’t think she’s going to offer me a part in it… I might be wrong.” While it would be great to see Davison and the rest return in some form, if it doesn’t happen at least Whovians will have a consolation prize: He’ll be lending his voice to a new Doctor Who audio drama entitled The Light at the End, along with fellow Doctors Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and Paul McGann. It will release in November.
Then there’s John Barrowman, who played the unsinkable, unkillable Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood. In an interview with ITV’s This Morning program, Barrowman hinted that he was “discussing” Captain Jack’s possible return, presumably with the Powers That Be. You can see the short clip below (unfortunately in terrible quality).
Since that’s the sort of thing that would tend to get Whovians all in a tizzy, Barrowman clarified his comments the next day via Twitter:

So he may well be returning, but whether it’s in character as part of the anniversary episode(s) or just in a retrospective special remains to be seen. Either way, it’d be a real shame not to have Captain Jack back.
Finally, Freema Agyeman, who played Martha Jones, also jumped on Twitter to respond to questions about if she would be involved in the festivities in some way. Unfortunately for Martha fans, it doesn’t sound like she’ll be back.
