TMNT April O'NeilToday, Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes released the first official look at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot with the film’s very first trailer. We finally got to see what the new version of the Heroes in a Half-Shell look like, without relying on blurry leaked images, the movie’s toy line, or Halloween costumes. Hot on the heels of the trailer, Paramount also released the film’s official plot synopsis. So what are the Turtles up to this time around?

We already knew the Turtles’ origin story was getting tweaked, and the trailer supports the rumors. It sounds like The Shredder and April O’Neil’s father were responsible for creating the Turtles. If Master Splinter turns out to be April O’Neil’s father, I think the fans will lose it! Here’s the synopsis:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Collider also got a chance to check out the film’s custom 3D glasses for the 3D screenings at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Paramount decided to go with 3D glasses that look like the Turtles’ ninja masks, complete with the appropriate colors. It’s a nice touch and I’m going to be on a lookout to collect all four!

Overall, I was pretty lukewarm on the TMNT trailer. I like that the turtles are updated, but at the same time, it seems like a little much. I’m not sure if changing the Turtles’ origins was a good idea, but I’m glad that the filmmakers are trying to be inventive. I’m glad to see that there is some humor with the Turtles, namely with Michelangelo, but considering that Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes is behind this movie, the humor could easily get out of control. Need I remind you of Devastator’s balls and Skids & Mudflap from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen?

The TMNT reboot stars Megan Fox, Danny Woodburn, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, and William Fichtner as The Shredder. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters everywhere on August 8.
