Ryan Reynolds Almost Made A Deadpool Christmas Movie

Ryan Reynolds co-wrote a Deadpool Christmas movie that was "lost in the shuffle" of the Disney-Fox acquisition.

Ryan Reynolds developed a Deadpool Christmas movie four years ago that was ultimately never made, though he apparently still hopes to. In a new interview in The Big Issue, Ryan Reynolds revealed that he and his Deadpool co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote an entire Christmas-themed movie about the fan-favorite Marvel character, though he did not have many more details about the specific story. If nothing else, this probably indicates that the upcoming Deadpool 3 does not have much of a Christmas subplot.

According to the interview, this particular project fell victim to bureaucratic processes, as so often happens with potential films. Ryan Reynolds seems to feel that A Deadpool Christmas (which is what we assume might have been a working title) was “lost in the shuffle” that occurred when the Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019. It is not surprising that some projects fell through the cracks in such a huge business deal, though it is a bit shocking that a movie starring one of the world’s biggest movie stars, featuring a mega-popular comic book character, and utilizing ever-dependable, public domain holidays themes did.

Still, Ryan Reynolds says that perhaps Deadpools in Toyland (another potential title we just came up with) still might get produced at some point in the future. He also referenced that the planned project was “not a musical,” which makes it seem like there were at least some song and dance numbers at some point. It also seems that Ryan Reynolds is a man who sticks to an idea that he likes, even if it does not end up being a Deadpool movie.

Specifically, Ryan Reynolds has indeed made a musical Christmas movie, though it does not involve Deadpool or any other homicidal assassins. Instead, Spirited is Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell’s new take on A Christmas Carol, the Charles Dickens novella that has served as source material for movies, television, and cartoons for nearly two centuries now. In this version, Ryan Reynolds plays a media consultant named Clint Briggs who is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) in order to redeem his hard heart.

Spirited also stars Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, Broadway legend Patrick Page, and Rose Byrne, so it is fair to say that the film is loaded with talent. Spirited is currently streaming on Apple TV+ and is one of the many, many projects that Ryan Reynolds is working on that are A Deadpool Kinda Christmas. Ryan Reynolds currently stars in Welcome to Wrexham, a documentary series that follows the lives of two extremely wealthy famous men who decide to buy a Welsh football club because it seems like a fun thing to do.

Ryan Reynolds will soon be reprising the role of Wade Wilson in Deadpool 3, which will finally team the title character up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (as well as any member of the X-Men that can be persuaded to show up, apparently). In addition, Ryan Reynolds will be appearing in IF, a comedy fantasy with Steve Carrell and John Krasinski.
