Speaking with Collider, Robert Rodriguez, the director credited with the newest Spy Kids release on Netflix, discussed how Armageddon differs from the original movie. In their discussion, however, the director finally revealed an update (via ScreenRant) about the long-in-development We Can Be Heroes 2, which might see Pedro Pascal return to his greatest superhero role.

Robert Rodriguez gave an update on We Can Be Heroes 2, the sequel to the Pedro Pascal Netflix hit, but the star may not return.

Rodriguez also confirmed that We Can Be Heroes 2 will feature a time jump within the narrative, showcasing the protagonists’ character development and growth in their skills as superheroes. The director stated that the project is in development and that the filmmakers are in a rush to make the sequel sooner rather than later because of the young actors growing up—though the script already takes that into account.

However, there’s still plenty we don’t know about the sequel, including whether Pedro Pascal will be returning to his role from the original film.

The original We Can Be Heroes, starring Pedro Pascal, was a massive hit on Netflix, and the streamer announced a sequel shortly after the film was released in 2020. Months later, director/writer Rodriquez confirmed that he’s returning to the project in a directorial capacity, with plans to begin principal photography for We Can Be Heroes 2 in 2022. However, that never happened, and based on his latest update, We Can Be Heroes 2 hasn’t made much progress since his announcement.

The original We Can Be Heroes, starring Pedro Pascal, was a massive hit on Netflix, and the streamer announced a sequel shortly after the film was released in 2020.

To be entirely honest, the delay might have taken place to accommodate the busy schedules of the star-studded cast and the director himself. Pedro Pascal was involved with The Last of Us, which has seen massive success in the entertainment industry, while Rodriguez worked on Hypnotic, The Book of Boba Fett, and the Billie Eilish concert movie Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, before making Spy Kids: Armageddon for Netflix.

But we remain optimistic; judging from his statements about We Can Be Heroes 2, it would seem that the director is now prioritizing the project, especially over a possible sequel to recently released Spy Kids: Armageddon.

And since we’re discussing a fictional universe full of superheroes with a fantastic range of powers and enemies, there’s plenty of potential for the upcoming story—in other words, there’s no shortage of material, and exploring potential storylines could make We Can Be Heroes into a franchise. If that turns out to be true, Pedro Pascal will have yet another franchise to call his own.

Pedro Pascal is currently one of the most highly-demanded actors in Hollywood, and considering that he already signed to appear in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel, his potential appearance remains questionable.

Considering that the director was ready to get the cameras rolling in 2022 suggests that Netflix made all the necessary preparations for filming and now waits for everyone’s busy schedules to line up so that the production can begin. And while there hasn’t been any official discussion on which members of the cast would return to We Can Be Heroes 2, we can only speculate.

We Can Be Heroes 2 is still in its pre-production stage, and Pedro Pascal’s involvement with the sequel still hasn’t been confirmed.
