Oh artificial intelligence, is there anything you can’t do? It’s been quickly taking the world by storm with new advancements in brainy technology rolling out every day, and now, Netflix is joining the foray into the future by training AI to edit films. In an interview shared on Twitter, which you can see below, creative technologist Kelly Griggs and several of her peers explain how the streamer is taking one big step toward the future.

Netflix’s main purpose for harnessing AI would be to better play out their match cuts, which Griggs explains to be two frames one shot after the next with similar movement. Examples of such play out during the interview while the creative technologists and other members of Netflix’s team talk about how powerful of a storytelling device these seamless transitions are. Described as “a very manual process,” the painstaking task is oftentimes felt by trailer makers who need to filter through hundreds if not thousands of shots to make the transitions make the most sense while still looking cool.

This is where the machine team came into play. One member of Netflix’s team took their chance in front of the camera to talk about how much help technology like AI can bring to the table when it comes to saving the creative team countless hours on what would have otherwise been a brutal process in front of their computer screens. In the end, one of the engineers said that both the creative and the technology teams had to work together to ensure that the job would be easier on them and give viewers the best-finished product.

Future seasons of Beef may be edited by AI

Netflix is just the latest corporation to use the power of AI technology to better itself and put itself ahead of the competition. From search engines to science and data collecting, artificial intelligence is shattering the boundaries of what we’ve thought to be possible. Of course, though, with every step forward, there’s also a step toward the darker side, as some researchers are worried that these studies are already going too far.

Most recently, researchers have discovered advancements in the artificial intelligence movement that enable users to clone their loved ones – giving them all the mannerisms of those closest to them. There have also been reports of a platform that creates a seance-like situation formed by AI to put grieving people in touch with their woefully departed – although that system is still in the very early stages. However, it seems as though what Netflix would be using AI for isn’t at all on this same level, with the streamer just trying to give their human team a break.

With Netflix pushing forward on how they see a future using AI, other companies and studios are sure to follow suit. An interesting and less time-consuming way to ensure the best quality and consistency for your viewers to feast their eyes on, there’s no way that others will want to miss out on this boost from artificial intelligence. After all, who wouldn’t want to be at the top of their match-cutting game?
