The Last of Us TV series announced that Kaitlyn Dever will be playing the role of Abby in Season 2. Fans of the video games will know that Abby is one of the most important roles going forward, so this is a big one for Dever. Dever seems like a perfect fit after wowing audiences with her performances in Booksmart and the sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You.

Kaitlyn Dever In No One Will Save You

Dever’s nearly silent performance in No One Will Save You especially proved that she would be a great fit for Abby in The Last of Us Season 2. Dever has also earned Golden Globe nominations for her work in Unbelievable and Dopesick, along with an Emmy nomination for Dopesick. Interestingly, Dever was previously in the running to play the role of Ellie in the first season before the role eventually went to Bella Ramsey.

Who Is Abby?

The Last of Us Season 2 is undoubtedly one of the most highly-anticipated upcoming TV shows after the first season brought in tons of viewers and critical acclaim. The second season will be adapting the events of the video game The Last of Us Part II, where Abby is the game’s co-protagonist.

Without delving too far into spoilers, Abby is a soldier/survivor in the post-apocalypse who is driven by an intense need for vengeance, and it seems likely we’ll be introduced to her right at the beginning of the season.

Series Creators Say Kaitlyn Dever Is The Perfect Choice

The Last of Us creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann explained their choice for casting Kaitlyn Dever for Abby in Season 2, saying, “Our casting process for season 2 has been identical to season 1: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material.”

This is likely partly to address fan concerns that Dever’s stature doesn’t quite line up with the character model for Abby in the games. Which is fair, because Abby is an absolute tank, and Dever will have to bulk up quite a bit to look exactly like Abby.

Backlash Over Ellie’s Casting

As Mazin and Druckmann explained, Dever’s talent is what drew them to cast her in the role of Abby for The Last of Us Season 2, and her performances in recent years definitely prove that she’s up to the task. Some fans also complained during Season 1 that Bella Ramsey didn’t look like Ellie, but they more than proved they could embody the character of Ellie and earned a Best Actress Emmy nomination for their performance. Pedro Pascal also earned an Emmy nom for portraying Joel and will also be back for the upcoming season.

Will Season 2 End The Story?

It’ll be interesting to see how Mazin and Druckmann decide to adapt The Last of Us Part II. The pair have confirmed that they’ll be adapting the game over the course of multiple seasons, so Season 2 won’t be the last we see of the series. The Last of Us Part II game takes place five years after the first game and sees Ellie and Joel living in Jackson, Wyoming alongside Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Tommy’s wife Maria (Rutina Wesley). It also remains to be seen how faithful The Last of Us Season 2 is to the game. For the most part, the first season didn’t deviate from the story of the first game, aside from the fantastic episode that focused on Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett). We’ll find out when the second season premieres in 2025.Source: EW
