Lady Gage is playing Harleen Quinzel and we have our first look at her on set for Joker: Folie à Deux
We’ve already seen what Lady Gaga will look like as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux (aka Joker 2), thanks to an image director Todd Phillips shared to social media last month. Now, courtesy of some new footage captured from the set of the hotly anticipated sequel, currently in production and filming in downtown Los Angeles, we have our first look at the 36-year-old star as Harleen Quinzel. In the clip, the singer/actress is wearing a dark coat and a gray beanie over her long blonde hair.
The video begins with Lady Gaga walking toward an old, bright blue sedan. She proceeds to pick something up, but we can’t quite make out what it is due to the large crowd of people around her. Seconds later, the performer throws the object through the window of what appears to be a display window for a television shop before rushing away with one of the sets.
The brief clip of Lady Gaga embodying the iconic role of Harley Quinn comes right on the heels of another video from the set of Joker: Folie à Deux featuring Joaquin Phoenix filming a scene as the Clown Prince of Crime. In that video, the Oscar-winning actor’s character looks to be being chased by two previous versions of himself. Fans have speculated the scene will be a dream sequence of sorts involving Arthur, but that has not been confirmed.
So far, story details for the upcoming sequel are being kept heavily under wraps. According to The Direct, however, Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn will be a committed patient at Arkham Asylum that falls for the Joker, rather than a psychiatrist who falls in love with the troubled character while attempting to treat him. This reworking of Harley Quinn is reportedly intended to keep in line with Todd Phillips’ more grounded take on the Joker.
Released in 2019, Joker was a massive hit for Warner Bros. After opening with $96 million, the film went on to earn over $1 billion globally. The story centers on the rise of Arthur Fleck, from aspiring stand-up comedian and pariah to Gotham’s clown prince and leader of the revolution.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he penned with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Convoy, Brett Cullen, Shea Whigham, Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler, and Leigh Gill. Lady Gaga did not appear in the first film.
Along with the movie’s financial success, it was well-received by both critics and audiences alike. In addition to Joaquin Phoenix taking home an Oscar for his performance in the film, Joker received multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing.
Joker: Folie à Deux won’t arrive in theaters until October 4, 2024, but with production in full swing and filming underway, we’ll likely see plenty of more footage from the film’s set pop up online in the coming months.
The sequel stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Harry Lawtey, Troy Metcalf, and Jacob Lofland. Todd Phillips once again directs the follow-up.
