Ryan Reynolds is a cell phone company magnate, a football team co-owner, and a gin maker. The man has a million hobbies and interests, and soon enough, maybe even an Academy Award for best original song. Ryan Reynolds sat with MovieWeb this week to discuss exactly what he’s planning to do if the song “Good Afternoon” is nominated for an Oscar, stating “If this song is nominated for an Academy Award, I would say that the least I can do is show up on that stage and embarrass myself.”

When he’s not busy pulling obscure video game cameos and crafting the most beloved on-screen depictions of Deadpool since the character’s inception in 1990, Ryan Reynolds can be found crafting beloved advertisements and starring alongside Will Ferrell in the new Apple TV+ film Spirited. The Christmas film, which was shot in the South Shore of Boston, Massachusetts, features a host of original songs that have become real earworms in the months since the film’s release. One song in particular, “Good Afternoon” which was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and performed in the film by Reynolds and Will Ferrell, has been generating some legitimate Oscar buzz.

Pasek and Paul have each expressed their desire to see Ryan Reynolds perform the song during an acceptance speech if “Good Morning” does in fact win. Reynolds’ assurance that he’s willing to embarrass himself seems to be a tacit agreement that he’ll perform the song if asked. Given the musical acts present in the past few Academy Awards, we’re left wondering if they’ll let Reynolds perform the song regardless, just for the ratings.

Spirited was released in November 2022 to widespread fan acclaim, adapting the source material of Charles Dickens’ 1843 classic, A Christmas Carol, and satirizing many of the adaptations since the original, while bringing the story to a new audience. The film saw a limited theater run, and mostly favorable reviews, becoming a newfound family Christmas classic for Deadpool fans across the world. Ryan Reynolds has continued to promote the film while jokingly prodding his fans with comedically laced Deadpool 3 advertisements.

Since Deadpool 3 will be the first film in the series to come out since the Disney 21st Century Fox merger, fans are still chomping at the bit to learn whether or not Ryan Reynolds’ famed Merc with a mouth will be a part of the MCU canon. This hype has only continued to grow with repeated teasers revealing the inclusion of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine, despite earlier reports that his stint as the character had come to an end following 2017’s Logan. The pair have long been friends, often engaging in online prank wars to the delight of Marvel comics fans.

The 2023 Oscars nominees are set to be announced on January 24th, with the actual awards ceremony airing live from the Ovation theater in Hollywood, California on March 12th. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if “Good Afternoon” gets the nomination and subsequently the win. We can all cross our fingers that if the film is snubbed by the Oscars academy, Ryan Reynolds can still perform the hit song at the Kids’ Choice Awards.
